GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood
and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of
laboratory instruments and information systems. Responsible for establishing and
ensuring standard work with consistent quality and corrective and preventive action as
needed. Participates in applied research and development projects to introduce new
technology and improved methods.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees and performs routine and complex chemical, cytologic, hematologic,
histologic, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic and/or microbiologic procedures
on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information
systems. The Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist is qualified to perform all duties of the
Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist job, and in a given job situation may or may not
perform all of the duties; actual duties will pertain to the specific Sr. Medical
Laboratory Scientist position.
Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or
develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes and
resolve problems.
a. Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent quality
and corrective and preventive action as needed.
b. Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the
accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release;
c. Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states;
d. Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologic causes
of unexpected test results.
Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of technical
equipment. Assists in the correction of technical problems and serves as a technical
resource redirecting the workflow or assignments as necessary to ensure proper
coverage and service standards. Following successful completion of competency
testing, may perform processing, testing, and result reporting without direct
supervision.
Teaches and ensures compliance with established divisional, departmental, and
institutional policies and procedures, including clinical and research guidance
compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and
infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. May be involved in
human subject research by recruiting, consenting, and collecting specimens from
patients.
Oversees quality assessment, regulatory, and accrediting requirements. Oversees
proficiency testing, quality control, and competency assessment of technical staff.
Maintains the laboratory in inspection ready status.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Completion of accredited Bachelor's Degree program in Chemistry, Physics,
Biology, Medical Technology, Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science or other sciences.
- Three (3) years of experience with progressive responsibility in a clinical laboratory
setting.
- Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform,
teach, and lead laboratory functions.
Vision: Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.
Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.
Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform
job functions.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES:
- Certification at the technologist, or medical/clinical laboratory scientist level from a
nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS, or HEW is
preferred.
