Description
Under general supervision, operates, maintains and repairs refrigeration, air-conditioning, ventilating and heating equipment and systems.
Examples of Duties
Installs, repairs, and maintains refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment of small to large capacities such as small to walk-in refrigerators and freezers, ice-making equipment, window and packaged area type air-conditioners, chillers and central air-conditioners of all sizes and capacities.
Repairs and maintains roof-mounted or other packaged HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning) units, forced air, hot water, and low and high pressure steam systems.
Installs, repairs, adjusts, services, and maintains industrial and domestic types of gas and oil-fired heating units and related equipment.
Dismantles and repairs or replaces defective parts, control circuitry, electronic, electrical or mechanical systems or components such as motors, compressors, starters, power packs, resistors, fuses, pumps, switches, wiring, fan assemblies, manual and motorized valves and dampers, supervisory control equipment, thermostats, and humidity zone controls.
Prepares, assembles, connects or overhauls a variety of pipes and ducts used in the installation or repair of refrigeration systems, piping refrigerants, air or other gases and liquids; lubricates and cleans equipment.
Checks pressures, recovers, vacuums and replenishes systems with refrigerant.
Locates and diagnoses malfunctions.
Trains and monitors the progress of apprentices/refrigeration equipment operators in the craft.
Prepares and maintains records of preventive maintenance, schedules, parts replaced, and work performed.
Instructs tradesmen on installation or repair of heating and related equipment and advises operators on proper operation of equipment.
Pumps out sediment in oil storage tanks.
Operates a variety of heating and cooling equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or G.E.D. including completion of an apprenticeship in refrigeration and heating mechanics, maintenance and repair.
Five years of experience in the repair, maintenance, alteration, or installation and operation of refrigeration, air-conditioning, ventilating and heating equipment and their electrical components .
Possession of the required licenses and certifications plus completion of an approved sequence of educational credits resulting in an HVAC repair certificate and an associate degree in HVAC diagnosis and repair work may be substituted for completion of an apprenticeship program.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
