About this Unit:
The Helen DeVos Children's Hospital PICU was recently awarded the Beacon Award at the highest level of Gold. We are the only PICU to receive this recognition in Michigan. There are only 33 PICU's in the nation that have received Beacon status and only 12 of them Gold status. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) created the Beacon Award for Excellence to recognize individual units that distinguish themselves by improving every facet of patient care. We are dedicated to the patients and families that we serve and areproud to be recognized as one of the best. This is a 24 bed unit with all private rooms. We are a level 1 PICU which means we have the highest acuity here. This PICU is also the only level 1 on this side of the state, getting a lot of patients. The type of patient population seen on this unit would be level 1 trauma/ critical trauma cases. Within this unit there is also a congenital heart and cardio vascular program. The age of children on this unit range from a few days old to 21 years of age. There is a pharmacy within the unit as well as their own research team. This unit also has a shared governance committee that gets to make a lot of decisions which directly affects RN roles.
