Job Summary
The Neurosciences Service Line at Spectrum Health is seeking a Physician Assistant to join our growing Neurosurgery APP team. As West Michigan's leading neuroscience referral center, and one of the largest providers of adult neuroscience services in the state, the Neurosurgery department functions within our multidisciplinary team to provide quality care, research, and education within the clinical neurosciences.
This position, in partnership with our Neurosurgery NP's and Neurosurgery Residents, will work mainly in the inpatient setting with plans to expand to the outpatient setting as the team grows. New APP's can expect a 4-6 month training process led by our experienced senior APP's. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently after appropriate training & demonstrate excellent clinical acumen. This position plays an integral role in the Neurosurgery team and works collaboratively & cohesively with our Neurosurgery physicians. We are excited to expand this team to 12 dedicated Neurosurgery APP's to provide optimal shift coverage.
Responsibilities/Expectations
6 AM - 6 PM / 6 PM - 6 AM shifts - 12 Hour shift length.
14 shifts over a 28-day period, with the expectation that 3 will be night shifts.
Weekend coverage - current expectation is 1 in 4 weekends (subject to change as team expands)
Holiday coverage - current expectation is 1 system holiday per year.
Management of primary Neurosurgery ICU & floor patients
Performing bed-side procedure
Completing neurosurgery consults
OR case coverage providing first assist
Neurotrauma Pager coverage
Education for our MSU/Spectrum Health Neurosurgery Residents
Collaboration with other providers & members of our health care team to deliver quality & safe patient care.
Under physician supervision, provides medical care to patients of varying type and acuity.
Essential Functions
Functions in the role of advanced practitioner to coordinate comprehensive care delivery. Writes orders/prescriptions for standard formulary medications, laboratory, radiographic studies and consultations, coordinating the scheduling of admissions, diagnostic evaluations, follow-up exams, laboratory tests, referrals to home care, social services, and other community agencies, etc., in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
Obtains histories and performs physical exams.
Assesses the patients/significant other, health care team, school and other community educational needs and develops, implements, evaluates and revises teaching strategies/educational programs related to area of specialty.
Acts as a patient advocate, crossing multidisciplinary lines to meet patient needs.
Communicates, collaborates, networks with and acts as a consultant to other members of the health care team within and outside Spectrum Health. Acts as a consult in area of expertise.
Performs and assists with designated procedures.
Documents in the medical record and dictates information as appropriate.
Provides input into the strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of service/program. Measures the outcomes of care and evaluate services across the continuum of inpatient to outpatient services. Makes recommendations to improve the quality of patient care provided and utilizes the scientific method of research clinical problems.
Qualifications
Required Master's Degree Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program
LIC-Physician Assistant - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
CRT-Physician Asst Certified (PA-C) - NCCPA National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants Upon Hire required
CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required Or
CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross 90 Days required
CRT-Pediatric Adv Life Support (PALS) - AHA American Heart Association 120 Days required
CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association 120 Days required
