About the Unit
6 South is a 22-bed acuity adaptable unit at Butterworth Hospital that is capable of managing both non ICU and ICU status patients admitted with advanced cardiopulmonary care needs.6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula.

Scope of work
Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider.Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider. Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
Orientation
Orientation for the first week of employment as Nurse Tech requires classes:
Monday:
Day 1 - NT Foundations 1 - 0800-1630 ALL New Hire NTs are required.
Tuesday:
NT Foundations 2 0800-1200: ALL NEW HIRE NTS are required.
NT Basic Skills 1300-1630: All new hire NTs unless exempt due to experience. (Exempt- prior recent hospital NT experience, nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation)
Wednesday/Friday:
NT Sterile technique class 08:00-16:30- all except exempt students (Exempt - nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation)
3rd week after start date - Monday- 08:00-16:30 Advanced Safety Care-all new hire NTs are required.
New Hires entering into Adult Critical Care departments will also need ACC class which is held within the same month as the start date (March 26th, April 24th, etc)
