Job Description Summary
The Instructional Designer will work closely with CTL and campus colleagues to support Michigan Tech's instructional team in the design and development of quality online and blended courses that support the effective use of current and emerging technologies and align with best practices. The instructional designer will work to enhance the faculty's pedagogical understanding of technology in online environments and serve as an advocate for quality online and blended course environments on campus. They will leverage their design and development expertise with new or updated online and blended courses using the Canvas learning management system (LMS) and associated educational technologies as appropriate.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Works with CTL colleagues to support university instructors in the development of quality online and blended courses through the appropriate blend of pedagogy and technology based on applicable learning theory and instructional design best practices.
Provides consultations and serves as a resource to faculty on the design, development, evaluation, and revision of learning outcomes, course modality, high-impact learning practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and digital accessibility issues, copyright, and effective assessment strategies.
Performs reviews of online courses and associated instructional materials and activities to recommend revisions that are aligned with internationally recognized standards and best practices.
Provides consultations and workshops for the MTU instructional team in support of research-based teaching practices.
Supports the development and delivery of the CTL's online course offerings (e.g., Foundations of Online Teaching).
Supports the use and adoption of educational technologies through the creation of training materials such as knowledge base articles, screencasts, or other asynchronous resources in collaboration with other CTL support services as needed.
Assists faculty in course building efforts within the LMS (Canvas), including: course design, use of templates, uploading course materials, developing assessments, and incorporating educational technology.
Serves as a liaison between unit and external and external stakeholders in the development and delivery of course materials.
Works with faculty to develop teaching and learning environments that emphasize active learning and incorporate appropriate instructional
technologies.
Creates and facilitates the creation of accessible instructional content to insure access to all course materials for all learners.
Maintains currency with best practices in the field of instructional design through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts, and participating in professional development opportunities.
Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
? Bachelor's degree in instructional design or education with an emphasis on
instructional design, educational technology, or related field.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
? Previous experience in an instructional design or related role.
? Experience designing, developing and supporting online learning.
? Experience using and managing learning management systems.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
? Masters degree in instructional design, education, educational technology or related field.
? Three or more years experience in an instructional design role.
? Experience designing, developing, and supporting online learning in higher education settings.
? Experience working in a team-based environment with instructors to manage expectations.
? Experience consulting with faculty during the course design and development process.
? Ability to work in challenging environments with difficult individuals and situations.
? Experience in supporting and leading campus initiatives, such as online course reviews.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
? Knowledge of adult learning theories and instructional design models.
? Ability to provide both instructional and technical design consultation services to subject matter experts (instructors).
? Ability to be flexible, creative, and innovative with course design strategies.
? Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, prioritize assignments and meet firm project deadlines.
? Ability to use knowledge of digital accessibility and universal design for learning best practices to develop course designs and course content that meet Section 508 standards.
? Ability to develop and deliver instructor training workshops and associated materials.
? Ability to communicate effectively orally, visually, and in writing, including the ability to transfer complex technical information into effective online or blended learning.
? Excellent problem solving skills.
? Excellent skills using learning management systems, video platforms, and productivity software during course design and development efforts.
? Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
? Ability to foster instructor enthusiasm for and engagement with innovative teaching strategies and technologies.
? Excellent skills using various software applications and web-based systems (e.g., Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Camtasia, Snagit, etc.) to design and develop quality online and blended courses.
? Ability to work with both MacOS and Windows operating systems.
? Skilled at graphic and web page design, including knowledge of HTML.
