GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT: POSITION OPENING
Special Education Teacher Consultant for the Visually Impaired/Orientation and Mobility Specialist
IN THIS ROLE:
You will provide professional development, direct and consultative services, evaluations/assessments, implementation strategies and technology support to Special Education professionals, students, and families in the local school districts of Oakland County. The goal is that students are provided access and services which will increase academic achievement and functional performance skills.
WHAT WE NEED:
We are seeking a creative and collaborative team member with exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills to provide specialized, direct instruction and consultative services to students with visual impairments birth through 26 years of age. In this role, you will also provide assistance and consultation to local school staff on the resolution of individual student academics; identification and effective utilization of available instructional materials and equipment; federal, state and local initiatives and mandates; coordination of acquisition, distribution, and usage of school-based technology and mobility devices, and assistance with the training of paraprofessionals, teachers, and other staff who work with students with visual impairments. Your expertise and knowledge of access methods for students who are visually impaired, connecting with outside resources, and ability to provide direct and consultative services for students, birth through 26 years of age including conducting evaluations/ assessments and preparing reports of findings and recommendations, will be a key in our efforts to increase academic achievement and functional performance skills. You will serve as a resource and liaison to external agencies and professional organizations and will collaborate with Oakland Schools Teacher Consultants, LEA staff, multidisciplinary evaluation teams, and community groups on matters related to visual impairments as well as specific concerns.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- Master’s degree in Special Education and/or Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with Visually Impaired (SK) endorsement. If an SK endorsement is not currently held, the incumbent would be required to enroll in a program leading up to an SK endorsement within 6 months of employment date and provide documented proof of endorsement when completed.
- Note: The Michigan Department of Education has partnered with several universities to offer eligible Michigan certified teachers the opportunity to earn a Visual Impairment endorsement, including tuition assistance. - Three or more years of classroom teaching experience, with no less than two of them in Special Education.
- Orientation and Mobility certification required.
- Knowledge and ability to consider/recommend appropriate Assistive Technology equipment.
- Knowledge and skills to consider appropriate Orientation and Mobility strategies and skills.
- Knowledge and ability to provide Low Vision Assessments and Orientation and Mobility Evaluations.
- Knowledge of Special Education process and documentation and general education curriculum and accommodations.
- Ability to provide professional development, consultation, and coaching.
SALARY DETAILS:
Salary commensurate with experience / Exempt Position / 10-month work year
