Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands and to talk or hear.
Minimum Qualifications:
We are seeking an accomplished Communications professional with at least 10 years of communications experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex nonprofit or business environment. Candidates with experience serving the Metro Detroit area with deep roots in Detroit and Wayne County are encouraged to apply. This is a high profile, high pressure role. All prospective candidates will be expected to successfully pass a rigorous vetting process and background check.
Specific requirements include:
- Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or Journalism is a plus. Candidates with a degree in a different area of study with commensurate experience and transferable skills will be considered.
- Highly collaborative style; leadership experience developing and implementing communications strategies
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
- A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
- Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence"
- High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
- Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, while prioritizing the voices of program participants and hard to reach populations
- Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
- Other duties, hours and shifting priorities as assigned.
Minimum Competencies:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point) required.
- Working knowledge of basic internet applications and programs including Google technology. The ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs for this position.
- Working knowledge of intermediate internet applications and programs including Google technology. Sage Intacct Software a plus
- Ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs for this position.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
- Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
- Ability to provide services for those persons facing economic, social, health, age, and educational barriers.
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment (as deemed necessary).
- Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
Valid identification and reliable transportation.
Travel Requirements:
Ability to travel to various sites.
Work Hours: Most work to be scheduled Monday through Friday with evenings, weekends, and nontraditional hours as required.
