GENERAL SUMMARY:
This classification functions as the Breastfeeding Coordinator for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Organizes and monitors the work process, ensures program compliance and provides superior customer service to our clients and staff. Plans, develops, implements and controls breastfeeding promotion, protection and support activities for the residents of Macomb County and participants in the WIC program. Provides breastfeeding training and consultation services to Health Department staff and outside agencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program within WIC.
Performs leadership and mentoring duties for the breastfeeding peer counselors and related staff within the WIC Program such as interviewing, hiring assistance, training, organizing work assignments, evaluations, and planning and implementing department policies and procedures.
Plans, develops, and implements the breastfeeding promotion and planning component of public health programs for the residents of Macomb County and participants in the WIC program.
Provides required nutrition services to high-risk and other WIC clients as needed.
Provides clinical lactation and nutrition assessment and counseling services to families enrolled in the WIC program.
Provides lactation and nutrition consultation, training, and technical assistance in the field of lactation and nutrition to health department staff and other community agencies.
Documents data, prepares reports, maintains client records, summarizes statistical data to help identify the nutritional needs in the county, and ensures program compliance.
Creates audio, visual, print, and electronic educational materials in print for training staff and the community.
Participates in local breastfeeding coalitions and workgroups, as well as other collaborative activities with key stakeholders in the community.
Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions. (if applicable)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Dietetics, Nutrition Sciences, Community Nutrition, or Public Health Nutrition

One (1) year of work experience in breastfeeding counseling
Preferred Education and Experience
-
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Dietetics, Nutrition Sciences, Community Nutrition, or Public Health Nutrition
-
Certification with the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC)
-
One year of work experience in WIC
Required Licenses or Certifications
-
Certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN)

Certification with the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) if not upon hire, within two years of employment

Advanced Lactation Credential such as: Certified Lactation Counselor, Certified Lactation Specialist, or Lactation Counselor and Educator
