Duration of Appointment: This is a temporary excepted service position not-to-exceed 1 year but may be extended up to a maximum of 2 years without further competition. Employment may not exceed 180 working days in a service year [1 hour worked = 1 day]. All qualified applicants, with or without Federal status, may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
Work Schedule: Full-Time
Travel Required: Position may require up to 15 nights of travel per month.
Relocation: Relocation expenses will not be paid.
Promotion Potential: The full performance level of this position will be set at the grade level at which you are selected.
Major Duties
As a Biological Science Aid/Technician with the U.S. Geological Survey, Hammond Bay Biological Station, some of your specific duties will include:
-Performs technical work in a laboratory or field environment in support of professional or technical employees engaged in data collection activities or analysis of biological data collection activities or analysis of biological samples.
-Collects biological, botany, fisheries or wildlife data from study of files or monitoring stations.
-Performs laboratory analysis of biological samples to determine specified chemical, biological, or physical characteristics.
-Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.
USGS has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. The official worksite for the selectee is the duty location identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this location on a regular and recurring basis.

Physical Demands: Work is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing, and lifting of equipment up to 40 pounds when in the field, sometimes during adverse conditions.
Work Environment: The work is performed in a laboratory or field environment. Field work involves moderate or sometimes extreme exposure to the discomforts of rain, cold/hot weather, and rapidly running or icy streams and rivers. Special safety precautions are required in many cases, and the employee may typically wear life jackets, special safety boots, waders, and special organism handling gear.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
--A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
--Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possession of a valid State driver's license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State License and a copy of your driving record.
Evaluations
Basis of Rating: Applicants will not be rated or ranked. All applicants that meet the basic eligibility and qualification requirements of the position will be referred to the selecting official in preference eligible order.
Qualifications
For GG-2:
Be at least 16 years of age or will be by the anticipated entrance-on-duty date.
For GG-3:
Experience or education beyond high school as described below is required:
3 months field party experience OR 1 year sub-professional experience OR 6 months college study (equivalent 15 semester hours) related to biology, physical science, engineering, or math.
For GG-4:
Experience or education beyond high school as described below is required:
6 months field party experience OR 2 years sub-professional experience OR 1 year college study (equivalent 30 semester hours) related to biology, physical science, engineering, or math.
For GG-5:
Experience or education beyond high school as described below is required:
9 months field party experience OR 3 years sub-professional experience OR 3 years college study (equivalent 90 semester/135 quarter hours) related to biology, physical science, engineering, or math plus 3 months lab or field work experience. Satisfactory completion of a field course in biology may be substituted for the 3 months of field and/or laboratory experience.
For GG-6:
Experience or education beyond high school as described below is required:
1 year, 9 months field party experience OR 4 years sub-professional experience OR 4 years college study (equivalent 120 semester hours) related to biology, physical science, engineering, or math: or completion of a full four or five-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field of biological science. At least 24 semester hours must include coursework in the biological sciences. Plus 3 months lab or field work experience.
