Job Summary - Director, Labor Relations
The Director of Labor Relations is responsible for and oversees all labor relations activity for Corewell Health. The Director develops, implements and leads a comprehensive and effective labor strategy, including development of positive employee relations initiatives to strengthen the long-term relationship between the system and its 60,000 + employees; development of union avoidance strategy and training for facility management; development of any union organizing campaign response; negotiation, interpretation and administration of collective bargaining agreements, management and preparation for strikes and picketing or other job actions by unions, development of union and labor relations-related training in compliance with labor law. The Director also advises and collaborates with senior leadership and members of the Human Resources team on applicable labor law, the current labor environment and legislative trends. Represents Corewell Health in, mediation and arbitration. This position will report to the Vice President of Employee Relation.
Essential Functions - Director, Labor Relations
In partnership with the CHRO and VP, HR Operations, develops, implements and leads Corewell Health's labor strategy.
Leads Corewell Health's union avoidance strategy, including risk assessment and mitigation, issue identification and resolution, and positive employee relations initiatives.
Serves as the primary point of contact for all union-related matters, including collective bargaining, organizing campaigns, petitions, mediation, arbitration and administrative charges.
Partners with inside and outside legal counsel as necessary on union-related matters.
Develops and leads organizational response to union organizing campaigns and election petitions.
Develops and provides training to Human Resources and leadership aimed at building internal capabilities on a wide range of labor/union-related subjects.
Leads the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements.
Responsible for providing guidance to corporate departments on business consolidations, outsourcing, and reductions in force which may implicate union workforce.
Provide direction to Human Resources and operating leadership on policy and CBA interpretation.
Oversees the grievance process to ensure contractual rights are upheld.
Prepares cases for arbitrations, administrative hearings, and trials.
Partners with inside and outside legal counsel to represent Corewell Health in mediation, arbitration, administrative hearings, and trials.
Ensure compliance with federal and state laws regarding employment and labor-related matters.
Researches the latest environmental and legislative trends and decisions to forecast impact and develop and lead organizational response.
Communicates proactively on labor environment and legislative trends.
Works closely with Human Resources and others to develop and maintain partnerships for effective administration of labor relations.

Qualifications - Director, Labor Relations
Required Bachelor's Degree from and accredited college or university.
Preferred Master's Degree in industrial Relations, labor relations or similar discipline.
Preferred Doctorate Juris Doctorate.
10 years of relevant experience The ideal candidate for this position will have 10+ years of increasingly responsible experience in Employee and Labor Relations working extensively with labor unions. The position has significant field-based responsibilities and may require local travel. Required
2 years of relevant experience At least two (2) years must have been in a project management, supervisory, or managerial capacity. Required
Extensive experience with union avoidance and union organizing campaigns. Required
Extensive experience negotiating Collective Bargaining Agreements. Required
Extensive experience with conducting employee investigations. Required
Extensive experience with resolution of grievances and the arbitration process. Required
