Job Description Summary
The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Michigan Technological University seeks an Assistant Professor of Theatre beginning in August 2024. The position is focused on theatrical lighting--the successful candidate will teach lighting technology and lighting design courses in the B.S. Theatre and Entertainment Technology degree program. Duties include head electrician, lighting designer, and oversight of student electrics crews for 4 entertainment events each year.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
Teach courses in lighting technology and lighting design.
Provide lighting designs for theatre division productions.
Serve as head electrician for theatre division productions.
Serve as a mentor of student lighting technicians.
Participate in department and university service as assigned.
Collaborate with faculty and staff in student recruitment.
Participate in academic assessment and curriculum development
Development of research/creative activities according to areas of expertise.
Integrate safety practices into daily activities and apply continuous improvement strategies to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
MFA or other terminal degree in theatrical lighting or related technical field completed by August 2024.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
Demonstrated experience of lighting design for a range of entertainment events
Demonstrated experience in lighting technology and production
Demonstrated experience in light programming
Desirable Education and/or Experience
3 years of professional experience
Experience teaching at the undergraduate level (preferably as the instructor of record)
Experience in lighting design/production for:
o Themed entertainment
o Experiential events
o Concerts
o Architectural/retail clients
o Museums
o Trade shows
o TV/Film
Experience in projection design, and/or video system design and implementation
Experience teaching drafting for the entertainment industry
Experience with show control systems
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
Vectorworks Spotlight and/or AutoCAD
Ability to manage and follow production budgets
Ability to use office productivity software (Google Suite, Microsoft Office), and online collaboration/teaching tools (eg. production management, video conferencing, Canvas LMS)
Ability to communicate and collaborate with an artistic/production team composed of both faculty and students, in coordination with design/tech faculty.
Ability to understand and meet the academic and artistic needs of students, both majors and non-majors.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
Experience or Interest in interdisciplinary arts collaboration.
Experience with the EOS family of ETC lighting consoles
Experience with additional lighting or technical software and hardware
Experience with moving lights and equipment
Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills

Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, wear and work in a harness, and to work at height
