Position Summary:
• Conduct the CMU Symphony Orchestra in a varied selection of performances (orchestral, opera, choral, musical theatre, annual youth concert), organize the annual School of Music Concerto Competition, and actively engage in School of Music recruiting efforts;
• Build and maintain strong relationships with public school teachers and assist in the development of outreach programs such as the CMU Honors Strings and Instrumental Workshop;
• Pursue scholarly and creative activity that meets CMU standards for tenure and promotion;
• Pursue the collaborative development of new initiatives within music education and possess the vision to guide a 21st century orchestral program;
• Oversee the orchestra program budget and other administrative responsibilities;
• Secondary responsibilities may include teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting, managing graduate conducting teaching assistants, teaching string methods, and/or observing student teachers;
• Additional duties may be assigned in accordance with areas of expertise and in consultation with the Director of the School of Music;
• Serve on departmental, collegiate, and professional committees.
Required Qualifications:
• Doctoral degree in music, conducting, music education with string concentration (ABD candidates will be considered if degree completion is assured befor duties commence), or commensurate professional experience, record of successful teaching and scholarly/creative activity in higher education;
• Demonstrated excellence in conducting at the professional, college, public school, or youth orchestra levels;
• Evidence of, or potential for, developing a national profile as a conductor and music educator;
• Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive and collaborative culture in a musical and academic environment;
• Evidence of successful collegiate, public school, or youth orchestra recruitment and retention of orchestral students;
• Demonstrated commitment to diverse and inclusive programming;
• Ability to teach courses outside the conducting area which might include theory, aural skills, music history, aspects of music production, and/or other elements of music technology.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

About the Department:
The School of Music is located in a state-of-the-art 119,000 square foot facility with a 500-seat concert hall housing a 61-rank Casavant organ, a 100-seat recital hall, MIDI technology labs, recording facilities, music resource center, and 79 practice rooms. The School of Music has 38 full- and part-time faculty and an enrollment of 350 undergraduate and graduate majors and minors.
