SUMMARY
Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors. Conduct walk throughs and inspections to encourage / coach / enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals. Coordinates with management to implement safety programs and procedures, and facilitates associated training.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conducts routine internal audits of the Company safety and health management program for adequacy, compliance and effectiveness. Develop, recommend, and implement improvements to programs.
- Coordinates the Company safety committee (prepares agendas & minutes, follows up on action items, etc.).
- Contributes to the ongoing continuous improvement of health and safety-related written compliance programs and training delivery methods.
- Leads the development and maintenance of all health and safety training program systems for staff and meets regularly with managers and supervisors, to move Company to a best practice organization in terms of safety and environmental compliance.
- Provides training to new employees to provide onboarding in Company safety practices and culture, coordinating with HR and using our internal Learning Management System (LMS).
- Reviews and analyzes injury frequency records, past compliance activities, compliance history, codes and standards as well as technical literature to determine optimal training frequency and delivery methods.
- Conducts occupational health consultations and analysis of Company workplaces to provide assistance in the identification, control and elimination of occupation safety and health hazards.
- In coordination with management designs systems to recognize and eliminate occupational safety and health hazards, including hazards which are recognized as risks to employees.
- Works with the purchasing department to establish and maintain relationships with vendors that are qualified to assist with industrial hygiene and hazardous building materials matters.
- Conducts safety and health surveys utilizing appropriate sampling strategies, analyzes data and provides follow up reports for stakeholders.
- Maintain Company SDS sheets, trainings, and recordkeeping.
- Works with engineering and maintenance to maintain information system of hazardous building and fabrication material sampling reports and abatement activities.
- Calibrates and maintains industrial hygiene equipment, as needed.
- Assists in responding to near misses, identifying employee injury causation trends, and mitigation options for reducing injury frequency and severity.
- Applies and interprets occupational health rules and consensus standards (i.e., American National Standards Institute, ANSI) to enhance understanding of compliance with appropriate standards and controls.
- Performs administrative duties associated with the specific duties of the position.
- Remains current on new technology, methodology and equipment.
- Maintain appropriate level of confidentiality and high standards of professionalism.
- Coordinate and lead Company's emergency response activities.
- Work together with management and Company's claims advisors to respond to regulatory inquiries, investigations, and the like.
- Works primarily during regular business hours Monday - Friday, and on second or third shifts as required.
- Comply with and adhere to applicable safety and work rules and requirements.
- Comply with and adhere to all applicable OSHA & ISO standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Can tolerate working in a combination of office and production environment
- Must be able to perform observations which may require reaching, twisting, bending, and squatting
- Use of personal protective equipment (e.g., safety glasses, ear protection)
- Job requires a combination of standing, walking, climbing stairs, and sitting
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree preferably in an occupational health or safety-related field
- Minimum 1 year experience in a health and safety position; manufacturing setting preferred
- Strongly preferred certifications: Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) or Certified Safety Practitioner (CSP)
- Thorough understanding of applicable laws and standards, including but not limited to OSHA, MiOSHA, and DEQ regulations, and their practical application
- Current OSHA 30-hour card, obtained or renewed within last 5 years
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people
- Solid, professional written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to complete assigned tasks
- Proven ability to identify problems and propose practical solutions
