Job Overview
We are currently looking for a Tool & Die Model Maker specializing to join our team in Holland.The start and end times for this position are flexible. Most model makers on the team are in the 6:00am-2:30pm range. Flexibility is also available to work 7:00am - 4:00pm.
As a Model Maker, you will:
Apply machine operating skills and knowledge of materials and processes to fabricate appearance models, functional prototypes of new concepts, and prototype dies or fixtures.Machinists and tool and die makers set up and operate a variety of computer-controlled and mechanically controlled equipment to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools. This is a highly skilled team that collaborates with all areas of the business on all projects from simple to super complex. Core work for the Model Shop ranges from supporting manufacturing, prototype and/or project execution for the New Product Engineering team and other special projects, along with working along side our Tailored Solutions team to develop custom product. The job is very rewarding as we get to see new products in the early development stages and help the engineers bring a good product to market. Access to many different pieces of equipment in the shop along with equipment throughout the organization.
Job Responsibilities
Analyzes blueprints, sketches, or verbal requests to determine processes, tooling, sequence of operations, and materials required to complete tasks and establish acceptable completion date with requestor.
Designs and builds special tooling and fixtures required to fabricate prototype parts and performs machine set-up for fabricating operations.
Advises engineers and designers of design discrepancies and manufacturing process limitations. Makes recommendations for improvement of part function or manufacturability to ensure lower-cost parts and high quality Haworth products.
Fabricates inspection gauges and fixtures to check quality of parts or hold parts for machining or assembly work.
Monitors and controls work flow through area of responsibility, allowing for minimal management of work by supervisor. Monitors work of other Model Makers in area to ensure parts are completed on time and manufactured to tolerance.
Assists with on-the-job training of lower-level Model Makers and department apprentices to ensure appropriate usage of equipment in area and assist apprentices with achievement of journeyman status. May act as lead person and provide day-to-day direction to lower-level Model Makers.
Advises supervisor in determining scope of outside support required; contacts appropriate vendors to place work, establish cost, provide instructions, and monitor progress.
Responsible for safety of self and others when operating equipment, as well as training of personnel who are unfamiliar with equipment use.
Performs preventative maintenance of Model Shop equipment used and general housekeeping of work area, requiring frequent bending and occasional ladder climbing to meet Haworth standards.
Performs cross-training with other Model Makers to acquire machine/process skills for improvement of self and overall departmental effectiveness.
Uses overhead cranes, hoists, and die carts to move/lift tooling, equipment, and parts. These items frequently weigh 50 pounds and occasionally weigh up to 200 pounds.
Do you have these required qualifications?
High School Diploma or GED
4 years of experience working in tool and die trade
Ability to work extra hours as required based on project deadlines and workload (Some Saturdays could be required)
Ability to read blueprints to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) drafting practices, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT)
Proven competence and demonstrated capability in all Model Shop processes
Ability to frequently lift material and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 200 pounds (assistance given with heavier objects)
Must be able to maintain confidentiality of projects in Model Shop
Ability to frequently bend and occasionally climb ladders
A current and continuing right to work in the United States without sponsorship
Ability to work in Holland, MI without relocation assistance
