Job Summary
The Property Tax Experienced Associate - SALT is responsible for basic research and analysis of property state and local tax (SALT) issues, along with utilization of tax software in the completion of basic tax returns and other tax filings and documents. In this role, the Property Tax Experienced Associate - SALT utilizes his/her educational background while working side-by-side with more experienced STS SALT members. The preferred candidate will have experience or willingness to learn both business personal and real property assessments in multiple states across the United States. This position requires significant involvement in the preparation of personal property returns, gathering assessment notice data for personal/real property and tax bill processing for multiple client assignments.
Job Duties:
Research
Identifies straightforward situations in which research is necessary, and provides an outline of the issue(s) and appropriate source of research to be conducted
Analyzes researched facts and the sources utilized prior to composing a detailed report of the research findings
Tax Compliance
Drafts tax memorandums, tax opinions and other documentation on various tax issues
Assists in the drafting of responses to notices from state and local taxing authorities
Prepares valuations for property tax assessment analysis
Provide exceptional client service to multi-state companies by working with a team to identify tax savings opportunities.
Assist multi-state companies with state and local tax controversies, which includes preparing clients for discussions with auditors, representing the client at hearings and at appeal meetings, and preparing protests
Responds to client inquiries and request from tax authorities
Ensures all data needed to comply with filing requirements is obtained, and identifies missing items needed for preparation of tax returns
Prepares property tax returns, as appropriate
Works with raw data to complete calculations
Monitors current tax law changes, and applies changes appropriately to the preparation of tax returns
Manages collection and retention of all appropriate workpapers for clients
Performs other duties as assigned
Tax Consulting
Participates in the negotiations and appeals of client assessments and tax positions
Develops, recommends and implements standard tax methods to provide clients with maximum tax benefits related to current and future tax obligations
Utilizes online research tools, prior tax returns, interviews with client personnel and other resources to gather pertinent tax information related to clients
Continues building tax knowledge by monitoring relevant tax laws and reviewing firm tax strategies and Tax Planning Ideas (TPIs)
Establishes relationships with professionals within Core Tax Services and other Specialized Tax Services groups to assist in identifying necessary resources available to resolve client needs and questions
Tax Related Software
Utilizes PTMS, tax research databases and other tax-related software in the completion of assigned tasks.
Tax Specialization
Develops an in-depth understanding of the technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding SALT tax benefits
ASC740-10
Understands and applies industry standards, along with firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements as they relate to FAS 109 and FIN48, as well as FAS5 for sales tax and unclaimed properties
Strategy Development
Assists in the preparation of studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of actions to benefits clients
Develops an understanding of the impact of a client's business objectives as it relates to the client's tax situation

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education:
Bachelor's degree, required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Math, or other related field, preferred
Master's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Economics, Math or other related field, preferred
Experience:
One (1) or more years of related experience, required
Prior internship or other work experience within a property tax setting or public accounting, preferred
Experience with real property appeals, preferred
Exposure to property, state and local and multi-state tax issues, preferred
License/Certifications:
Property Tax Consultant License, preferred
Software:
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the Internet navigation and research, required.

Basic knowledge and understanding of cause/effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential tax issues
Basic knowledge of appraisal theory, filing methodologies and frequencies for tax returns
