JOB TITLE: Cook Assist
RESPONSIBLE TO: Food Service Director
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Food Service Director/Dietary Supervisor, prepares food. The Cook Assist position is responsible for all major duties and responsibilities and essential functions of Culinary Job Description. This position is responsible for carrying out all scratch cooking techniques.
This title includes POD Cooks and Café Cooks
REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge and skills typically acquired through a high school degree.
- 3 years of Experience of cooking in a health care facility preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of and skill in the application of quantity food preparation and techniques and practice.
- Thorough knowledge of kitchen sanitation, personal hygiene, food handling and storage practices.
- Safe serve certification preferred, post hire.
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Confers with Food Service Director/Dietary Supervisor about the preparation of food for meals and assists in estimating quantities needed.
- Prepares foods listed on menus using safe food handling methods. Responsible for taste and quality of finished product.
- Assures that food is served at the proper time correct temperature, consistency, and is held at the proper temperature.
- Makes advance preparation for the next day as directed by Food Service Director/Dietary Supervisor
- Assists in the training of new employees.
- Keeps records of daily food usage and notifies supervisor of supply needs when appropriate.
- Cleans own work area. Performs other cleaning duties as scheduled.
- Serves meals and in dining room and kitchen.
- Records food temperatures prior to meal service. Takes corrective action for temperatures in the “Danger Zone” and notifies supervisor.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and perform overhead lifting
- Pushing & pulling of heavy carts up to 225 lbs.
- Daily lifting of 50 pounds (if any product is in excess of weight limit two people will work together to achieve goals/ and or break down into smaller increments example: Large mixing bowl from mixer)
- Ability to perform other common physical movements as needed for the position.
- Standing for shifts lasting from 5hrs-11hrs / or greater if voluntarily picking up shifts.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Must be able to read, follow oral directions and writer legibly.
Must be honest, trustworthy and possess tolerance for all individuals.
Must be able to communicate with other departments.
Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility which include a medical and physical examination.
Must be able to work with little or no supervision. Maintain a dependable attendance record.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to hot and cold temperature extremes. Works with a variety of appliances, kitchen utensils and cleaning products.
