Have at least 90 oncology continuing education hours within the past 5 years as well as maintain practice and education requirements as outlined by ONCC for the AOCNP certification.

ORGANIZATION
Accountable to the Oncology Service Line Director and Vice President, Operations
Accountable to collaborating physician(s) as outlined in the collaborative practice agreement(s).
Provides direction to RNs, Medical Assistants, Oncology Clinical Navigators, and other categories as appropriate.
Works collaboratively with all physicians involved in oncology patient care and all members of the patient care team.
Prescriptive authority is delegated by Physician Medical Director, under the Michigan Board of Nursing regulations.

GENERAL

Performs clinical functions as outlined in a collaborative agreement collectively created by the NP, clinical cancer services director and collaborating physician(s) upon hire. Maintains evidenced based clinical care in line with national guidelines when available/appropriate.
CLINICAL
Inpatient (acute care) - Admit patients to the hospital, perform daily rounds, write orders, and take call within rotation as outlined in collaborative agreement. Coordinate care provided by multiple specialists including hospitalist providers and nurses.
Outpatient - follow-up visits, chemotherapy teaching, symptom management, and H&P exams
Multi-Disciplinary - Initial H&P, order staging studies
COORDINATION
Inpatient care - Assist in the development of efficient and standardized transfer protocols for patients needing an oncologic diagnostic work-up; Assist in the development of protocols for management of common oncologic problems seen in the emergency room and inpatient setting to be used by MMC and affiliate hospitals for the purpose of improving efficiency and quality of care.
Patient navigation - Be the point person in collaboration with the clinical navigator for a specific group of patients. Maintain efficient and effective collaborative relationships with all physician specialists involved in oncology care including nurses, social workers, primary care physicians etc.
Multi-disciplinary clinics - Coordination of physician specialist and ancillary services; Communicate with patient and other providers regarding plan of care; facilitate multi-disciplinary tumor conference, delegate tasks to and supervise clinical navigator for assigned tumor sites.
Affiliate infusion sites/oncology clinics - Coordinate close to home care when possible; Work closely with affiliate sites to provide clinical consultation and direction functioning as a liaison between outreach staff and physicians as well as patients.
Survivorship care - Work with patient, oncology physician(s), and primary care providers to establish an individualized survivorship plan for oncology patients assigned to your service.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Regional cancer care - Provide consultative services to outreach clinics as assigned. This does not include travel to the sites for direct patient care on a regular basis. This may be required on an occasional basis to cover in the physician's absence.
EMR implementation - Perform assigned tasks as they relate to the implementation of the oncology EMR.
Patient navigation - Pioneer the implementation of an efficient oncology patient navigation system utilizing NP expertise and clinical navigator support. Constantly evaluate and improve processes through monitoring patient satisfaction, provider satisfaction, and patient outcomes data.
Multi-disciplinary clinics - Maintain and improve current multi-disciplinary processes as well as develop new clinics to eventually cover the top cancer sites including but not limited to breast, lung, prostate, colon, lymphoma, head and neck, uterine.
Academic cancer center collaboration - Maintain and improve current relationships with collaborating cancer centers and develop new alliances as appropriate.
Telemedicine - Support and seek to develop new ways to utilize telemedicine to allow for improved access to specialty care close to home. Perform tasks related to telemedicine care as assigned.
Second opinion services - Facilitate second opinion services utilizing telemedicine when appropriate optimizing our connection to specialist care and maintaining close to home care when possible. Facilitate communication with local physicians, specialists from academic centers, and patients.
SUPERVISION
Chemotherapy Infusion Nurses/Clinical Staff - Assist, as assigned, infusion clinic manager & patient care coordinator and off-site practice managers in developing and supporting standardized infusion protocols, competencies, and processes; Assist, as assigned, in the interviewing/hiring of nursing infusion staff.
Clinical Navigators - Directly supervise clinical navigators and delegate tasks as appropriate for the overall coordination and care of the cancer patient.
RESEARCH
Clinical trials - Maintain knowledge regarding available clinical trials and support the patient, physician, and clinical research staff by assisting with coordination of patient enrollment and ongoing requirements of the study
Development of new alliances and processes - Continually seek ways to develop partnerships to promote a "culture of research" for the MMC oncology program.
Original research - Consider spearheading or collaborating with others in the oncology service line to develop original "programmatic research" opportunities.
