Description
The
Registered Nurse (RN) is a member of the Patient Care Team. The Registered Nurse is responsible to set
the standards for the level and quality of care. The RN has responsibility, authority and
accountability for the provision of nursing care. The RN manages and provides patient care
activities for a group of patients and their families through application of
independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members
including ancillary and support services.
The role of the Registered Nurse at the KCI encompasses leadership,
partnership, collaboration and supervision.
The RN establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with
physicians, other health care providers, patients, and families, to achieve
desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The RN delegates, assesses, provides and
evaluates patient care. The RN assesses,
monitors and evaluates patient status by observing the patient, noting data
collected by other team members and analyzing this information to independently
develop a plan of nursing care which is implemented by the care delivery team
under the supervision of the RN. This
plan of care has pre-established goals that are determined in conjunction with
the patient and family. Psychosocial needs
are assessed and prioritized by the patient and the health care team. The RN provides and delegates patient care
activities to team members based upon patient needs and team member
skills/abilities and supervises the delivery of care by other team members. The RN evaluates patient response to
treatment and nursing interventions and if needed, revises the plan of
care. The RN monitors patient progress
and prepares patient for discharge, utilizing established clinical
pathways. The RN reports directly to
senior unit management and participates in shared decision-making activities.
Responsibilities:
Establishes a therapeuticrelationship and creates a detailed plan of care with the patient andfamily, mutually determining the aspects of care which are most important.Evaluates the effectiveness of plans and interventions to promote optimumachievement of established goals. Initiates and maintains opencommunication with other members of the team to assure that the patientand family receive the full scope of interdisciplinary expertise andservices with a coordinated and integrated plan of care. Communicates with patients, families,subordinate staff and peers to ensure that plans and associatedinterventions are understood, operationalized and revised, as appropriate.
Provides leadership to othermembers of the team by articulating expected standards of care andencouraging and supporting team members and their contributions. Acts as the first level of supervisionfor subordinates and may be asked to participate in hiring or evaluationof them. Assigns, delegates, and supervisesother employees and intervenes as appropriate to ensure that the plan ofcare is carried out, continuity of care is provided and that establishedoutcomes are achieved through availability and appropriate utilization ofhuman, material and financial resources.
Provides guidance, counseling andmentoring, to targeted peers and subordinates to enhance learning experiencesand improve the professional practice environment within the designated worksetting.
Participates in process improvementactivities with an emphasis on increasing continuity in the nurse topatient relationship, minimize rework, redundancies and ensuring patientsafety.
Demonstratesprofessionalism and a commitment to improving the work environment throughparticipation in meetings, timely and effective communication and anembracement of cultural diversity.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
BSN preferred.
Oncology experience preferred.
Licensed to practice as a registered nurse by the state of Michigan.
