Department SummaryAs a Substation Construction Field Leader (Electric Field Leader-C), you will:- Join a team responsible for construction of new Substations and enhancements to existing Substations.
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise construction activities associated with HVD and Distribution Substations.
- Provide oversight/direction to a contracted workforce and will interface with multiple workgroups internal and external to Consumers Energy.
- Effectively organize and simultaneously lead multiple projects ranging in size and value. You will be responsible to meet cost, schedule, scope of work, and work within the project management process.
Job Description/Responsibilities- Responsible for planning, organization, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of Contractors assigned to the construction of our HVD and distribution substations.
- Precisely define the scope of the project; creating a "Request for Proposal (RFP)," defining the project schedule, coordinating internal and external resources, and overall project management.
- Provide planning, coordination, oversight/direction to ensure regulatory and environmental compliance and completion of planned construction of Transmission and Distribution Substations in a safe and cost-effective manner.
- Frequent the construction site to ensure environmental compliance, safe work practices, monitor and report progress, and verify the end product meets the desired project outcomes.
- Ensure compliance of all CE applicable safety requirements and regulations pertaining to work within an energized substation and adherence to working clearances.
- Provide storm restoration support. This may include on call assignments.
This position is available atthe Alma Service Center.
Required Qualifications- A High school diploma / GED (required)
- 2or more years of applicable work experience in electric transmission substations/lines or electric distribution substations/lines and at least 2 years of successful performance in the Field Leader role or other comparable supervisory experience.
- Technical knowledge in electric transmission and distribution substations/lines gained either through a technical field of study and/or through related work experience.
- Working outside of normal work hours during storm or emergency restoration and responding to emergent needs anytime of the day, including evenings and weekends.
ANDSuccessful completion of the following within 12 months of starting your new role:
- LVD and HVD Switching and Tagging Training.
- DEQ Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans and Soil Management Guidelines Training.
- Asbestos Awareness Training.
- Confined Space Awareness Training.
Preferred Qualifications
- SAP proficiency.
- Microsoft Office Applications.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Project Management experience or PMP Certification.
- Utility or electrical contractor experience.
- LVD and HVD Switching and Tagging Training.

- Asbestos Awareness Training.
- Confined Space Awareness Training.
- Substation background; Familiarity with construction practices for substation construction, including civil work such as foundations, grading, drain installations, and steel structure erection.
Essential Functions- Excellent communication skills to lead, plan, coordinate, and direct successful construction of our transmission and distribution substations in a safe and cost-effective manner.
- Be able to interpret substation drawings including Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Civil drawings, Electric Layout drawings, and understand substation equipment.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal Direct Supervision.
- A self-starter and must possess the ability to coordinate activities among internal and external groups.
- Recommend proposed changes, manages change well, able to problem solve, eliminate waste & human struggle, prepare and maintain reports and scorecards, and standardize work.
- Strong leadership and safety skills, negotiation skills, and use of wireless technology, and strong computer skills are required along with an ability to travel as the work location requires.
- Support Storm Restoration efforts.
- Regular attendance is expected.
Hours and Travel- This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
- Travel is required to job sites (typically 70% of your time in the field or working in remote locations).
- You will typically spend 30% of your time in an office setting.
- All salaried Electric Operations employees are required to have a storm role.
- Additional hours are required as necessary to meet deadlines, complete emergent work or assist with storm restoration activities.
- This position requires the individual to work outside of their assigned headquarters to augment Construction workload and to assist with storm restoration activities which may require overnight stays.
- Year-round travel to and from job sites and project meetings could be significant dependent upon location.
- Individual must have a valid Driver's License.

- You will also experience a variety of site conditions/hazards commonly present on construction sites such as: uneven terrain, open excavations, overhead obstructions, moving equipment, objects in motion, and suspended loads.
