Summary
Mechanically design special machines and equipment from concept sketches or quotes to final release and support during the build process.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Managing workload by setting priority of work orders
- Plans, develops, and implements Mechanical Design department policies and goals
- Designs functionally sound specialty machines and or equipment keeping in line with our standards while meeting the needs of our customers
- Support Junior Designers and detailers throughout the project and review work
- Maintain good customer relations during the design process
- Sending prints out for quoting
- Dealing with outside vendors on machined components and purchased components
- Maintain timing charts to verify machine is within the given cycle times
- Understand concepts and capable to implement it into a design that aligns with our customer’s needs
- Thinking outside of the box to create unique / special designs
- Translate the requirements of detailed part drawings to iges, catia or step files, into functioning SolidWorks format
- Follow all company safety protocol
Qualifications
- Ability to read, interpret, and explain complex documents including but not limited to work instructions drawings, statistical data, CAD data, and CMM data.
- Understanding the use of static and dynamic loading
- Full understanding of material specification in mechanical design, i.e. when and where to use hardened steel
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex written or oral instructions
- Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in complex situations
- Comfortable communicating in difficult situations in both individual and group settings
- Ability to use an objective and balanced approached toward analysis and decision making
- Possess strategic awareness and the ability to lead a team to meet strategic goals
- Proficient in the latest Solid Works software
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint
- Understanding of different software translations. step, iges, catia
- Understanding of mig welding, spot welding, robotics, material handling and robot cells
- Understanding Bill of Materials and purchased technical components
- Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensions & Tolerances) and how to apply to fixture design
- Experience and understanding of the automation industry
- Self-starter

Reporting Structure
This position has no supervisory responsibility and will report to the President.
Physical Work Conditions
The physical demands required to successfully perform the job are as follows.
- The employee will need to be able to stand, walk, Sit or kneel
- The employee will need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- The employee will need to be able to read, write, hear and talk
- Proper personal protective equipment must be worn when required
Education Required/ Preferred
- Minimum of an associate degree and related experience or training
- 2- 5 years’ experience
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
- 5-8 years of Mechanical Design experience (Preferred)
