Job Description
The Boat Pilot pilots boats carrying chartered passengers on sightseeing trips, fishing trips, and for transit. Vessels include a 40-foot 42 passenger steel hull passenger boat, and 24 foot fiberglass hull water taxi and fishing charters. Water Charters are utilized by backpackers, campers, and canoeists for rapid transit. Fishing Charters are either four- or eight-hour excursions trolling the area reefs generally within a six-mile radius.
Must possess a valid United States Coast Guard License to operate or navigate passenger carrying vessels with the proper tonnage and geographical area(s).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures all passengers and crew understand and abide by all safety procedures; ensures all passengers board and exit the vessel in a safe manner
- Loads and unloads passenger’s luggage, gear, equipment, etc.
- Responsible for tackle and other equipment assigned to each vessel.
- Assists with routine and preventative boat maintenance; ensures vessels remain operational and safe
- Ensures vessels are neat and clean before passengers board and after charter completion
- Knows and follows all company, Environmental, Health, and Safety Management Programs and policies.
- Works extra shifts and hours as required.
- Assists in other positions and departments as needed.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Read, write, speak and understand English.
- Must possess a valid United States Coast Guard License to operate or navigate passenger carrying vessels with the proper tonnage and geographical area(s).
- Must be at least 19 years of age.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM JOB DUTIES:
- Must be able to understand normal conversation and accurately communicate information.
- Ability to stand, walk and balance on paved, unpaved, uneven, moving/rocking, and sometimes slippery surfaces for extended periods of time.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders occasionally.
- Ability to remain seated for extended periods of time.
- Ability to stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, turn, push, pull, grasp, and reach down, forward and overhead frequently.
- Manual dexterity to tie fishing lures with fishing line.
- Ability to safely drive various watercraft.
- Ability board and deboard boats.
- Strength and ability to start a 25hp outboard motor via rope-pull.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: Adverse conditions may include extreme heat and/or cold, wind, humidity and sometimes inclement weather.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB DUTIES:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and 1 year of related work experience, or equivalent combination of work experience and education required.
