Summary
The Classroom Assistant position with U Prep schools is a unique role which has been created specifically to support the return to the in-person learning option for families for the 2020-21 school year. There is an opportunity for those hired in this role to become a member of the network’s Substitute Teacher pool for the 2021-22 school year.
This role is critical to the success of the in-person learning programs that will be offered to our returning scholars for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. In addition to supporting the lead teacher in accomplishing their educational objectives, the Classroom Assistant will serve as a substitute teacher in the event of the lead teacher's absence. This position will primarily work in-person but may occasionally work remotely. This individual will work with scholars who are present in-person and attending virtually.

Classroom Assistant Responsibilities
- Supports scholars in accomplishing the teacher’s daily educational objectives
- Provides individual assistance to children in small groups
- Collaborates with the lead teacher to recognize issues students are facing and recommend solutions
- Assists teacher in maintaining a safe and secure environment in the classroom
- Supports the oversight of students during recess and lunch periods
- Classroom Management duties
- Maintains, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
- Reports to the school operations manager or school receptionist upon arrival at the school
- Works in assigned classes at designated times and locations
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, network policy, and administrative regulation, pertaining to teacher and students
- Reports any unusual occurrence or event to the principal or the designated representative immediately
- Remains at school during the entire school day unless excused by the principal or the designated representative
- Implements all rules and regulations, policies and administrative guidelines as adopted by U Prep Schools
- Maintains a professional appearance and positive attitude as an example to the students
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
- Adheres to all expectations as outlined in orientation and set forth by U Prep leadership
- Performs other duties consistent with the position as may be requested by the School Director or the designated representative (ie. before or after school duties, attend staff meetings, professional development and sub during prep period as needed
- Substitute specific duties
- Teaches lesson plans as outlined by the absent teacher
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and communicates these objectives to students
- Provides learning online and in person
- Directs a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students
- Demonstrates knowledge and incorporates technology in daily tasks, as required
Education and Certification
- Minimum of 60 credit hours from an accredited college/university
- Must provide official transcripts
- Obtain a substitute teaching permit in the state of Michigan you must have a transcript with a minimum 2.0 GPA or hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate
Compensation
- $17.50/hour, ~7.5-8 hours per scheduled day (excludes holidays or school breaks)
- This position is not benefit eligible.
