Position Overview:
The Utility Technician is expected to participate in all phases of the Reed City Plant utilities system's life cycle, including design, development, test, installation, startup, and support. The Utility Technician understands the benefits of and is committed to the development, application and enforcement of plant and corporate standards as they relate to Plant Utilities systems. They will be empowered to, and must be capable of, confidently making informed, competent, and independent decisions on a routine basis. This position requires little supervision and relies on personal experience to plan and accomplish goals. They must serve as a plant expert in control and automation technology and must be willing and able to train others in this technology.
Main Responsibilities:
- Performs duties in a safe manner
- Identify issues in the plant and take appropriate action to get the work done
- Prioritize work orders from multiple different people each day and get them completed on time
- Eager to communicate back to the person on the floor that is having the issue you are dealing with
- Work on major projects that come into the plant
- Provide a list of repairs or needed equipment for spring plan to the facilities Engineer yearly
- Maintain RETA CIRO Certification
- Active member on ARM (Ammonia Refrigeration Management) and related programs
- Active in ARM audits, Insurance and Risk Assessment, and Boiler audits
- Troubleshooting and repairof plant Compressed Air and Vacuum systems
- Troubleshooting and repair of plant HVAC systems
- Maintain routine maintenance checks and repair of the boiler system and boiler chemicals (troubleshooting and repair)
- Troubleshoot electrical system for utilities up to and including VFD drives, PLC controls and air handlers
- Will perform all routine PM's and maintenance of above mentioned equipment
- Cleaning of evaporator coils and smaller roof top units. Will change filters on routine basis. Will perform PM functions and keep documentation up to date
- Work in other areas of the facility in emergency situations
- Perform daily inspections and repairs of ammonia, glycol, steam, and pump house
- Calibrate PH and TDS controller for the ammonia tower water
- Wear radio for communication with MTL and TLs
- Perform ultrasonic preventative maintenance routes
- Train on new and additional equipment
- Use Maximo system for work requests, work order initiation, and planning and scheduling work orders
- Adherence to company safety policies
- Maximize efficiency of facilities assets - keeps waste to a minimum
- Work with, suggest and recommend outside vendors for support when needed
- Resource to train apprentices and mechanics
- Daily inspection of Waste water pump house, Milk plant Utilities, chillers and air handlers, main plant steam boilers, air compressors, Roof top units, All air handlers for each room
- Member of Emergency Response/HazMat Team
- Other duties as assigned in Job description and by MTLs and TLs on shift
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have the ongoing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- High School Diploma or GED
- 6+ years of experience in Ammonia Refrigeration, Compressed Air, HVAC, and High & Low pressure Boiler systems
- RETA CIRO Certification
- Proficient knowledge in:
- Refrigeration cycle
- Compressed air & vacuum systems
- Room air pressurization for mold issues
- PLC controls
- Ammonia and Freon refrigeration systems
- Plant hot water/steam boilers & controls
- Maintenance CMMS Program (Maximo)
- Willing to work different shifts for emergencies or with vendors
Must be able to perform physical tasks for extended periods of time including: standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting over surfaces
Ability to wear protective clothing and equipment such as safety shoes, face masks, safety glasses, hearing protection, a hard hat, a hair/beard net and gloves when required
Resperator fit tested & certified
50 lb weight lifting as required by the position
Willing to work around industrial high speed moving machinery
Ability to work in confined space such as bins, silos, or tanks
Ability to work at a tobacco-free site, except for designated areas
