Position Summary
The Zhou lab in the Department of Animal Science studies the impacts of nutritional interventions on production performance and health-related metabolic alterations. A fundamental goal of Zhou lab’s research program is to improve performance and health in animals, and to uncover the underlying physiological and molecular regulatory mechanisms.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performs routine laboratory techniques: DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, immunoblotting, microscopy, and other molecular biology assays
- Maintains cell culture facilities and cell lines
- Supervises and instruct students in the performance of basic laboratory techniques
- Assists in surgical procedures and post-operative care of experimental animals
- Maintains lab records and protocols
- Monitors and control hazardous and other materials used in laboratory procedures
- General laboratory and equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, preparation of reagents, preparing standard proposal documents and invoices
This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related science field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biology, nutritional science or related field; experience and understanding of basic concepts of biochemical, molecular, and cellular biology; experience handling live animals, preferably dairy cattle; experience performing basic wet-chemistry techniques in the lab; experiencing organizing and analyzing data; experience with collecting and handling blood and tissue samples; willing to occasionally work irregular hours; knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
