The Corporate Applications Engineering group focuses on improving customer application and process opportunities utilizing abrasive products sold by Saint-Gobain Abrasives, North America. Key industrial markets include Aerospace, Automotive, Bearing, Production Cabinet, Cutting Tool, Foundry, Furniture, Gear, Medical Instruments and Prosthesis, Metal, Paint, and Composite Finishing, Particle board and Plywood Production, and the Primary Metals Manufacturing markets. Within these industries, a myriad of applications that utilize abrasive products to remove metal, wood or composites, achieve part shape or dimension, and / or to generate a specific surface finish is supported. These markets generate over $475M in North American revenues and also provides over $2.5 billion dollars in abrasive growth potential to Saint Gobain Abrasives' Bonded, Coated, and Superabrasive businesses. Share growth is generated by deploying application engineering resources to differentiate our products and services at existing and potential customers thereby providing real process solutions and cost savings on site.
The Application Engineer will provide technical support, training and on-site applications assistance to field sales and our customers to assure results at target accounts. The goal is to increase market share profitably by offering value-added/differentiated products & services that solve technical problems and to satisfy or exceed the expectations of our customers. The Engineer's efforts will also focus on determining product needs, developing marketing strategies and establishing cross-functional communications (SOA and R&D) & activities to develop new products that solve customer needs. End-use applications supported by the Precision / Cutting Tools group include automotive powertrain and components, aerospace, bearing, cutting tools, ceramics and composites.
Competencies Required:
A Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent and 3-5 years experience is desirable. Excellent verbal, written, presentation and computer skills (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) are required. Ability to be self-directed and motivated and work in a cross-functional team (Manufacturing - Product Management - Sales - Research) environment is essential. Good process analytical and improvement skills and mechanical aptitude are desirable. A candidate that exhibits leadership skills, possesses the ability to create change in the organization around strategic initiatives, and who can grow into positions of increasing responsibility is highly desirable.
Job Description:
The Application Engineer in this position must possess excellent bi-lingual skills (Japanese - English); speaking fluent Japanese and have very strong reading and writing skills for technical documentation using the Japanese language; for example, print material, brochures and SOPs. Also, will need to be available for North American, Asian and European time zone communication as needed. This position has special focus on the Automotive OEM's and tier 1 auto parts manufacturers, especially Japanese transplants. The incumbent will be an international liaison and will become recognized as an expert, offering training & support for projects to sales, customers, and OEM's (Original Equipment Manufacturers) accounts.
The Application Engineering position is a dynamic position requiring self motivated and managed individuals who will aggressively and positively position us at our customers and in the assigned markets. The successful candidate will analyze requirements and competitive situations, initiate the development, testing, and introduction of new products and support key manufacturing initiatives for the Precision/ Cutting Tools group. The engineer will also participate with cross-functional teams as required, utilizing sales, manufacturing and product engineers and R&D as resources, to realize target account goals and corporate initiatives. Significant interaction with staff at various Customer Technical Centers and other customer corporate groups will be required to promote and support SGA initiatives. The engineer will become the recognized expert in specific applications, offering training and managing support projects for sales, customers and OEM accounts. This position requires approximately 60% travel time in the field.
