Under the general direction of the Manager, performs engineering and administrative tasks associated
with road construction and maintenance. Work is performed in accordance with the overall
departmental policies and accepted professional standards but with considerable latitude for the
exercise of independent judgment in solving problems that arise within the delegated area of authority.
Work involves considerable contact with township, county, state and federal officials, private
construction contractors, and the public.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL DUTIES:
? Design and supervise the design of complex roads, bridges, culverts, and asphalt overlays used
in road construction and maintenance projects.
? Supervise the construction of roads and other projects.
? Keep accurate project records both electronic and hard copy.
? Determine ownership of land to be used for construction; make preliminary survey to establish
ownership; write property descriptions for acquisition purposes; make appraisals of land to be
purchased; recommend reasonable value for land to be acquired.
? Surveying of roads, bridges, and culvert construction.
? Prepare permit applications for wetland and stream crossing impacts and oversee other
environmental concerns such as underground storage tanks and salt storage.
? Analyze maintenance activities for procedural improvements.
? Prepare and submit various funding request applications; develop and submit planning and
programming documents.
? Perform dam safety inspections per MDEQ requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB ELEMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS (ADA):
The County Highway Engineer position is generally within a professional office environment, free of
adverse working conditions. However, field duties will often encounter adverse conditions where
strenuous effort is required, and the following physical requirements must be met.
Mobility: Able to walk extended distances and climb ladders or steps to access equipment and
facilities.
Agility: Able to lift, push, or pull objects weighing upwards of 80 pounds, and ability to operate
equipment.
Vision: Able to read and comprehend instructions, directions, and other documents.
Hearing/Speech: Able to converse orally with telephone or radio, and to receive and
communicate information to employees and the public.
Other: Able to tolerate, be exposed to and work in extreme temperatures and weather
conditions.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
? Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering.
? Professional Engineer Designation
? Knowledge of Public Works design and construction.
? Experience with contract/grant writing
? Knowledge of ProjectWise, Roadsoft, Field Manager, MERL
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
? Registered to practice civil engineering by the State of Michigan Board of Engineering Examiners
or the ability to become registered.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
This is a full-time position not covered by a union contract. The successful applicant will serve at the
pleasure of the Board.
