Kett Engineering is looking for a Talented and Motivated Engineer for a Technical Center in Superior Township, MI to join the Vehicle Efficiency Engineering Team. This Engineering center focuses on improving Powertrain and Drivetrain efficiency of this clients vehicles for the North American market. The team’s key roles and responsibilities are:
• Establish targets for future fuel economy characteristics through analysis of current and future vehicles as well as competitive vehicles
• Investigate new technologies, strategies, and methods to attain improved fuel economy in current and future production vehicles while considering system costs, drivability, and performance impacts
• Analyze competitive data sets and assess future trends in fuel economy related technologies
• Lead activities for developing and integrating fuel economy related technologies (such as engine, torque converter & transmission, accessories, vehicle coast down characteristics, as well as control logic and calibrations) to attain targeted vehicle fuel economy and to understand and document impacts/trade-offs to vehicle performance and drivability
• Understand and coordinate activities with Product Planning, Certification and Regulation teams on impact of proposed fuel economy technologies
This position is responsible for project success as part of a project team providing technical support to internal customers in the area of Powertrain /Vehicle R&D. Travel requirement for this position is up to 10%, primarily domestic and occasional international business trip would be required. The ideal candidate must have the following capabilities and be able to significantly contribute to achievement of teams objectives:
• Run vehicle test for fuel economy, performance benchmarking, and analyze the test data using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
• Understand current GHG/CAFE regulations that govern introductions of new vehicle technologies in US market
• Research current regulatory requirements including testing procedures and provide concise information to help other engineers understand technical requirements
• Conduct in-depth research of advanced fuel economy technology trend in U.S. market to identify technologies utilized/recommended for compliance strategy including GHG/CAFE Credit program
• Identify vehicle technologies that would result in fuel economy increase on EPA certification cycles and off cycles via GHG/CAFE Credits (A/C & Off-Cycle Credits) for current and future Hyundai and Kia production vehicles
• Develop new fuel economy technologies and strategies that enable short-term and long-term benefits for production vehicles
• Integrate new technologies in appropriate vehicle applications and run appropriate testing for validation
• Exercise virtual modeling and scenario analysis that predict the impact of various technical and market actions at a system, product, company and industry scale
• Interact with experts from around the company including Powertrain, Vehicle Engineering, Product Planning, Regulation & Legal Affairs to support and influence the development fuel economy strategy
• Support engineering teams within the company and our overseas R&D Center to define and demonstrate fuel economy improvement concepts and technologies in vehicle applications through testing and simulation
• Support communications and negotiations with US EPA & NHTSA on GHG/CAFE Off-Cycle Credit amounts, and development of official applications to the government agencies
• Support annual applications and reporting for vehicle Off-Cycle technologies related to key regulatory programs
• Coordinate with internal development teams to track technologies being applied to vehicles, or being considered for future adoption
• Coordinate and track development and test plans
• Create and present reports, with documentation of technical analysis, system trade-offs as well as business case for technologies.
Basic Qualifications:
· Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or similar related degree
· At least 10 years of experience in (1) testing powertrain and vehicles, (2) evaluating performance, emissions, and fuel economy test data, (3) writing and presenting technical reports for other engineers and managements
· Strong interpersonal and technical problem solving skills
· Knowledge of internal combustion engines, transmissions, and vehicles
· Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS/INCA
· Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
· Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record (we will run your MVR)
Preferred Qualifications:
· Masters of Science in related Engineering field from an accredited university
· More than 12 years of experience in (1) testing powertrain and vehicles, (2) evaluating performance, emissions, and fuel economy test data, (3) writing and presenting technical
reports for other engineers and managements
· Experience in (1) analyzing current GHG/CAFE regulations & their impact on vehicle technologies, (2) assessing future trends in vehicle technologies & their impact to fuel
economy, (3) understanding and analyzing GHG/CAFE Credit related regulations (A/C & Off-Cycle Credits) for US market
· Experience with 1-D physical modeling tools such as AVL-Cruise, GT-Drive, and Autonomie
