Department Summary
This position is within the Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Division of the Transmission and High Voltage Distribution (T&HVD) Engineering. The division is responsible for all electric system I&C engineering and design activities for the transmission system and the high- and low- voltage distribution systems of Consumers Energy.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The Design Technical Analyst is a team member of one of the design sections of I&C.The select candidate will be responsible for producing detailed design drawings and supporting documentation to support capital and O&M projects. Projects will range in scope from new electric substations down to single I&C device modifications and change-outs, as well as smart/intelligent I&C devices on electric lines. These design packages typically contain electric substation one-line WD, schematic, front-view, and detail/switchboard wiring drawings.
Key Responsibilities include:
•Utilizing MicroStation for drawings with limited drawings in AutoCAD.
•Produce additional project deliverables which typically will contain detailed bills of materials, circuit lists and other electronic database reports of project deliverables.
•The Design Technical Analyst may also assist in the scope document process, project cost-estimates, project meetings, AC and DC load analysis, panel check out and closeout estimates.
•The select candidate may also assist in material evaluation or new technology integration.
•The employee will spend a significant amount of time utilizing computer based applications with some minimal field verification/inspection work as required.
The select candidate will be required to possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
•Possess good clear oral and written communications skills and a keen attention to detail.
•Able to work alone (self-motivated) but also work successfully in a team environment with other employees of varying technical skills.
•Employee will occasionally be required to walk on uneven surfaces with loose gravel, mud, snow and ice.
•Employee will be required to maneuver within confined spaces.
•Employee may be required to have specific arm, hand and finger strength and dexterity specific to job requirements.
•Produce detailed and complex engineering design drawings utilizing computer-aided drafting software within a confined time period supportive of a production oriented role.
•Interpret substation equipment wiring diagrams and SCADA point lists.
•Receive and support field calls to address questions with design packages and assist in troubleshooting.
•Travel to company substations, power plants, HVD or distribution lines or customer facilities to visually inspect present status of facilities to support producing designs.
•Successfully be able to evaluate design alternatives to determine safest and most economical designs.
•Willing and able to follow instruction, assist in training of co-workers, and cooperate with other employees and customers.
This position will be located in Jackson, Michigan at the Parnall Road Office.
Required Qualifications
•A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology.
The following skills and experience may set you apart from others:
•Prior electric substation, I&C, system protection or industrial (relay or PLC) controls experience.
•Prior CAD experience.
Essential Functions
•Engineering support for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support processes for all utility operations.
•Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices.
•Supervise and consult on a complex set of activities in support of the energy delivery systems routinely in the engineering analytical space on a frequent basis.
•Lead and/or assist with GIS (geographic Information System) model construction, data construction and data analysis.
•Lead and/or assist with engineering support for the design, plans, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation.
•Provide engineering support services with accuracy, on time and under budget.
•Use computer assisted engineering, design, and drafting software and equipment to prepare engineering support and design documents.
•Understand and follow company established standard procedures for file structure and standard drawing procedures for projects.
•Become familiar with plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately.
•Assists in client contact and communication.
•Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public.
