Position Summary
Salary: $28.34 with progression up to $32.39 upon meeting requirements.
This position will repair, maintain, alter, and install large and small rooftop and window air conditioning units and mechanical refrigeration units/systems; works on chambers and other related temperature controlled rooms; overhauls and services refrigeration units by replacing and adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, evaporators and vacuum pumps; repairs leaks on valves, piping, connections, fittings, and coils; starts systems, observes operations, interprets gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to maintain necessary levels of fluid, pressure, and temperature; performs pressure check of systems for leaks, then properly evacuate and recharge the refrigeration system for proper refrigerant charge; tests components using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment; assists in or perform work on other mechanical systems, as capable. This position will also interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; estimate time and material to be used on the job; stock, maintain, and may operate a University service vehicle. This position may carry an on-call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience; five years of experience in the refrigeration trade; or one year Trades Helper II in the refrigeration trade and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification; or completion of an approved refrigeration apprenticeship program; considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the refrigeration trade; considerable knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and federal); Possession of a valid vehicle operator''s license. Must furnish own tools. Frequent lifting over 75 pounds; this position requires knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
Desired Qualifications
State of Michigan Mechanical Contractor License with endorsements for 4) refrigeration and 7) limited refrigeration or 8) unlimited refrigeration/air conditioning service; more than five years of experience with trouble-shooting, installation, evacuating and charging of large commercial air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including: chillers, split systems, walk-in coolers, freezers, growth chambers and ammonia refrigeration systems; experience working on large tonnage mechanical and absorption chillers;experience with the servicing of smaller systems, including window air conditioning units, refrigerators and ice machines; experience working with customers and other mechanics involving other building trades; must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification. Possession of EPA 608 Universal Certification.

Monday through Friday first shift- 8:00am - 4:30pm - may require after-hours, weekend and holiday work.
