This position is within Hydro Operations. The Hydro Forester is responsible for forest management of over 16,000 acres of forested lands associated with Consumers Energy's Generation Operations.These lands are located along the Au Sable, Manistee, Muskegon, Grand and Kalamazoo Rivers as well as the Ludington Pumped Storage Facility and the Campbell Generation Facility.

This position requires working outdoors in all type of weather conditions and extensive walking in all terrains. The candidate must have strong communication and negotiation skills. This position is in charge of all forest management activities from planning, setup, implementation, and contract administration and also assists with inspections of recreation facilities, including contractor oversight of repairs on such facilities. Additional requirements include assistance on wildlife habitat, invasive species control, as well as knowledge of local threatened and endangered species.
This position is responsible for:
•Forest management planning to meet long-term and short-term management objectives
•All timber sale preparation activities including planning, boundary marking, marking timber, completing sale cruises, and preparation of harvest maps
•Preparing, offering, awarding, and administering timber sale contracts
•Collecting, analyzing, and updating forest inventory data and associated ArcGIS database
•Supporting work to meet Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations as required by Hydro Land Management Plans
•Maintaining all pertinent records internally and providing reports to land management agencies annually regarding land management activities
•Inspection of recreation facilities for prioritization of repair and replacement projects
•Provides oversight of contractors engaged in repair and construction activities of recreation facilities and ensuring work occurs in a safe and efficient manner
•Conducting all invasive species monitoring and control efforts including herbicide application and developing mechanical control proposals
•Maintaining professional/supporting relationships with other departments within Consumers Energy
•Maintaining professional/supporting relationships with State and Federal land management agencies and local timber industry (e.g., loggers, mills, and procurement staff)
•Oversight and management of lease agreement to operate a gravel mining operation
•Ensures land management activities occur following the ordered priorities of Hydro Operations

Requirements/Qualifications
•A Bachelor's degree in the applicable field of study. Less than a Bachelor's degree may be acceptable if accompanied by extensive Company or industry experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.
The following experience / skills may set you apart from others:
•A Bachelor's degree in Forestry
•2 or more years of related work experience to the position
•A valid state driver's license and experience driving four wheel drive vehicles.
•Society of American Foresters membership
•Working knowledge of the ArcGIS suite of programs
•A Commercial Pesticide Applicators license, or ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment
•Microsoft Office suite of programs (word, excel, outlook, etc.)
•A strong background selling timber and associated job functions
•Experience using GPS-Data logging devices to collect forest inventory data
•Experience using TCruise, SoloForest, and ArcGIS database management
•Experience using forest inventory information to develop forest management plans and make management decisions
•Knowledge of legal land descriptions and ability to navigate in the field using complex surveys and legal descriptions
•Knowledge of local pathogen/pest management and control methods
•Knowledge of basic construction and carpentry methods
