Overview
A Tool and Die Maker is responsible for building, repairing, maintaining, and modifying tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and precision equipment used in manufacturing operations. This position requires the ability to read blueprints, operate machine tools, troubleshoot tooling issues, and ensure production equipment meets quality and safety standards. #MFP
Responsibilities
- Construct, repair, maintain, and modify dies, molds, fixtures, jigs, and tooling.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications.
- Set up and operate manual and CNC machine tools, including lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot tooling and production-related problems.
- Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other inspection equipment.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on tooling and equipment.
- Test completed tools and dies to verify proper operation and dimensional accuracy.
- Work closely with engineering and production teams to improve manufacturing processes.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
- Document repairs, modifications, and maintenance activities.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Die Maker or Toolmaker within a manufacturing environment; shop room experience is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD for designing and modifying tooling components.
- Strong knowledge of CNC programming (G-code), CAM programming, and CNC machining operations including lathe and milling machine setup.
- Familiarity with plastics injection molding processes and associated tooling requirements.
- Skilled in manual machining techniques using hand tools, grinders, mills, lathes, calipers, micrometers, and other precision measurement instruments.
- Ability to interpret mechanical blueprints, schematics, schematics with GD&T annotations accurately.
- Knowledge of electrical discharge machining (EDM), grinding operations, and metalworking processes.
- Mechanical aptitude combined with excellent shop math skills necessary for precise measurements and calculations.
- Experience working with schematics related to electrical systems or machinery maintenance is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality control in measuring parts and assemblies.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate across teams including design engineers and production staff.
