Job Summary: Perform specialized mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and routine maintenance of heavy and light automotive equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical duties in the repair, inspection and maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered buses, trucks, cars, and other power-driven equipment, with guidance and direction from upper level personnel.
- Prepare necessary records pertaining to work performed.
- Serve as a key contact for the District’s annual inspection of school buses by the State of Michigan.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies and materials. Follow a predetermined preventative maintenance program on buses, trucks, cars and other power-driven equipment.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to lower level personnel. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Act as a back-up driver for buses operated by the District.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Manager.
- Regular and consistent attendance.
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.

Qualifications:
- Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades.
- Work requires a practical knowledge of heavy and light automotive mechanical equipment maintenance normally acquired through 4 years of automotive repair experience.
- Must be a State Certified Mechanic and have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s license, Class B, with Air Brake and School Bus endorsements and pass a required MDOT physical.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment and any random drug testing.
- Proficient computer and document skills.
