The Department of Mathematics in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a full time new Lecturer III position to begin August 25, 2027. This is a non-tenure track position with a university year appointment (i.e. runs August 25 through May 24 each year). The initial appointment period will be four years and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.
A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties. Lecturer III positions in mathematics typically carry a teaching load of two courses per semester as well as a significant administrative responsibility.
Qualified candidates will have a doctorate in Mathematics prior to the start date of the position and have substantial experience teaching mathematics at the collegiate level. Additionally, the candidate will have professional actuarial credentials, with preference for candidates holding Fellowship-level designation such as FSA, FCAS, FIA, or an equivalent internationally recognized credential.
Demonstrated university-level teaching experience, preferably including courses in actuarial mathematics, probability, statistics, financial mathematics, or related quantitative disciplines. Criteria for selection and renewal include excellence in classroom teaching, demonstrated administrative skill, and the ability to work productively with faculty and staff in our departments.
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
-Fellowship-level actuarial credentials and significant professional actuarial experience.
-Experience teaching courses aligned with SOA or CAS examination pathways.
-A record of peer-reviewed publications in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, risk, or related fields.
Professional Engagement
Because actuarial science is inherently connected to professional practice, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain meaningful engagement with the actuarial profession. This may include collaboration with insurance companies, consulting firms, financial institutions, government agencies, professional societies, and alumni.
Professional engagement should enhance the department's curriculum, provide students with career opportunities, and create pathways for collaborative research and experiential learning.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
