Behavioral Health Specialist (BCBA/LBA)
The Behavioral Health Specialist (BCBA/LBA) serves as the primary behavioral authority within a specialized residential setting supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), Mental Illness (MI), and other neurodiverse conditions.
This role applies behavioral analysis principles at a systems level rather than providing direct ABA therapy. The Specialist uses observation, intervention, evaluation, and documentation to improve resident outcomes, strengthen staff competency, and ensure behavioral services are data-driven, measurable, clinically justified, and compliant with applicable Michigan Mental Health Code, Michigan Medical Provider Manual, CMH, MDHHS, and organizational requirements.
Salary: $85,000–$97,000 per year
Essential Responsibilities
Behavioral Assessment, Planning & Compliance
- Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), identifying relevant antecedents, behaviors, and consequences.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) and Behavior Treatment Plans (BTP), including restrictive and non-restrictive interventions.
- Ensure behavioral plans are current, clinically appropriate, measurable, and updated based on ongoing data and observation.
- Prepare and present cases to the Behavior Treatment Plan Review Committee (BTPRC).
- Ensure timely completion, submission, revision, and renewal of behavioral documentation.
Data, Observation & Outcomes
- Maintain a strong presence in the residential environment to observe resident behavior and staff implementation.
- Establish and monitor data collection systems measuring behavior frequency, duration, and intensity; intervention effectiveness; and resident progress.
- Analyze behavioral data to identify trends and root causes, modify interventions proactively, and demonstrate measurable outcomes.
- Maintain accurate, timely, clinically sound, and defensible documentation.
Staff Training & Development
- Design and implement training related to behavior and function, crisis prevention and de-escalation, BIP/BTP implementation, approved restrictive and non-restrictive interventions, documentation, and data collection.
- Provide hands-on, in-the-moment coaching to residential staff.
- Evaluate staff competency and ensure consistent, accurate implementation of behavioral plans and approved interventions.
- Develop training materials and maintain training records for compliance and audit purposes.
Program Oversight & Integrity
- Work directly with Behavior Technicians and RBTs to ensure fidelity to behavioral plans.
- Conduct routine audits of behavioral programming and staff performance.
- Promote consistency in behavioral approaches across shifts, departments, and environments.
- Identify program deficiencies and implement corrective action plans.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to integrate behavioral strategies across residential, clinical, and day-program environments.
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment meetings and provide behavioral expertise to treatment planning.
- Promote consistent communication and continuity of care.
Resident Support & Clinical Presence
- Provide ongoing behavioral support within the residential setting.
- Assist with behavioral crises and post-incident reviews.
- Conduct root cause analysis and identify opportunities for system and staff improvement.
- Advocate for person-centered, least-restrictive, trauma-informed approaches.
Documentation & Accountability
- Maintain real-time, accurate, and audit-ready FBAs, BIPs, BTPs, treatment updates, behavioral data, and staff training records.
- Ensure documentation clearly links assessment, intervention, and outcomes.
- Meet all internal and external documentation and compliance deadlines.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in Applied Behavior Analysis, Psychology, Special Education, or a related field.
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and/or Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) required.
- Minimum 3–5 years of behavioral programming experience.
- Experience with ASD, I/DD, and/or mental health populations required.
- Residential or inpatient behavioral health experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of CMH/MDHHS regulatory requirements strongly preferred.
