Behavior Support Technician

Location: Ann Arbor, MI – Onsite
Position: Behavior Support Technician (BHT/RBT)
Pay: $20/hour
Schedules: 8:00 AM–4:30 PM or 12:00 PM–8:30 PM
Workdays: Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday

The Behavior Support Technician serves as a key member of the clinical and residential team, supporting the implementation of behavioral interventions based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles in a residential setting. This role focuses on behavior reduction, skill development, client engagement, community integration, and staff coaching.
The BHT/RBT works under the direction of a BCBA/BCaBA and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide consistent, person-centered, trauma-informed care.
Essential Responsibilities
Behavioral & Clinical Support
- Implement individualized behavior support plans and protocols developed by the BCBA/BCaBA across residential and community settings.
- Use ABA-informed strategies such as reinforcement, prompting, redirection, and shaping to reduce maladaptive behaviors and increase adaptive skills.
- Conduct observations and collect accurate behavioral data to identify trends and evaluate intervention effectiveness.
- Provide real-time coaching and feedback to direct care staff regarding behavior plan implementation.
- Model professional, therapeutic, and trauma-informed interactions.
Staff Coaching & Engagement
- Serve as an on-shift behavioral resource and mentor for staff responding to complex or high-acuity behaviors.
- Monitor meaningful client engagement, daily schedules, programming, and therapy participation.
- Observe staff-client interactions and provide immediate coaching, redirection, and positive feedback.
- Teach behavioral techniques, de-escalation strategies, and engagement methods.
Client Support & Community Integration
- Provide direct 1:1 behavioral support and supervision as assigned.
- Assist clients with community access, transportation training, and development of independent living skills.
- Support social skills and natural supports through pre-teaching, role modeling, and post-activity feedback.
- Provide therapeutic intervention in community settings to improve participation and goal attainment.
Crisis Intervention & Safety
- Respond to behavioral crises using approved intervention models, such as QBS Safety-Care.
- Provide guidance to staff during behavioral escalations to promote safe and effective interventions.
- Maintain situational awareness and serve as a campus-wide behavioral support resource during high-risk situations.
Documentation & Data
- Complete accurate and timely behavioral data collection, documentation, and reporting.
- Track behavioral trends and intervention outcomes.
- Complete incident reports and other documentation in accordance with organizational, AFC, and regulatory standards.
- Communicate behavioral data and observations to the BCBA/BCaBA and treatment team.
Team & Program Support
- Collaborate with BCBAs/BCaBAs, clinicians, therapists, and residential leadership.
- Maintain effective communication with Residential Supervisors and clinical disciplines, including OT, PT, Speech, Psychotherapy, and CTRS.
- Assist with client incentive and reinforcement systems.
- Provide coverage during evenings, weekends, and other high-need periods as needed.
- Support a safe, structured, therapeutic environment that promotes independence and dignity.
- Complete additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Valid Michigan driver’s license required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or a related field preferred.
- Experience with behavioral support, behavior treatment plans, or individuals with behavioral needs preferred.
- Experience with CMH and/or TBI populations preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to collect, enter, and analyze data.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
