Director of Behavioral Programs
The Director of Behavioral Programs serves as the strategic and operational leader responsible for designing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive behavioral support system across the campus. This role extends beyond traditional BCBA functions by creating an integrated behavioral framework supporting individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), Mental Illness (MI), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
The Director ensures behavioral supports are proactive, data-driven, person-centered, trauma-informed, and least restrictive. The role promotes consistent implementation across residential, clinical, and program environments and integrates behavioral practices into staff training, daily care, activities, and organizational culture.
Essential Responsibilities
Behavioral Systems & Program Development
- Develop and oversee a campus-wide behavioral support model.
- Establish standardized processes for Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plans/Behavior Treatment Plans (BIP/BTP), and behavioral data collection.
- Develop tiered behavioral supports, including universal supports, targeted interventions, and intensive supports involving enhanced staffing and high-risk behavior management.
- Ensure continuity of behavioral care across departments, units, and shifts.
- Lead trauma-informed, person-centered, and least-restrictive programming.
Staff Training & Workforce Development
- Develop and lead a formal behavioral training program for all staff levels.
- Provide training in behavior function, crisis prevention and de-escalation, BIP/BTP implementation, appropriate restrictive and non-restrictive interventions, documentation, and data accuracy.
- Establish ongoing training, recertification, and competency validation.
- Provide in-the-moment coaching and modeling in residential settings.
- Develop Behavioral Champion/Lead Staff roles within residential units.
- Evaluate staff performance related to behavioral supports and implement improvement plans as needed.
Behavioral Support & Enhanced Staffing
- Design and oversee Behavior Technician/Registered Behavior Technician (BT/RBT) support models.
- Establish criteria and protocols for enhanced staffing and intensive behavioral monitoring.
- Ensure behavioral staff are appropriately trained, supervised, and aligned with resident treatment goals.
- Develop staffing models that balance safety, independence, dignity, and therapeutic benefit.
Residential & Clinical Integration
- Partner with Residential, Nursing, Clinical, and Therapeutic departments to align behavioral programming with medical and clinical needs.
- Lead and participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
- Ensure behavioral interventions are consistently implemented across environments.
- Integrate behavioral supports into daily routines, activities, and environmental design.
Behavioral Programming & Activities
- Develop structured, behaviorally appropriate programming, including sensory-based activities, skill-building opportunities, and social/adaptive functioning groups.
- Ensure activities are matched to resident needs and behavioral profiles, engaging and reinforcing, and designed to promote skills and reduce maladaptive behaviors.
- Collaborate with recreation and therapy teams to coordinate programming.
Data, Outcomes & Continuous Improvement
- Establish systems to track behavioral incidents, intervention effectiveness, staff compliance, and resident outcomes.
- Analyze data to identify trends, systemic issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Use measurable outcomes to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Present behavioral performance metrics and recommendations to organizational leadership.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure behavioral programming complies with the Michigan Mental Health Code, MDHHS and CMH requirements, and organizational policies.
- Oversee Behavior Treatment Plan Review Committee (BTPRC) processes.
- Ensure accurate documentation and audit readiness.
- Lead incident reviews and root cause analyses.
- Develop corrective action plans and monitor their effectiveness.
Leadership & Program Oversight
- Supervise behavioral professionals, including BCBAs, Behavior Specialists, BTs/RBTs, and Clinical Psychologists, as applicable.
- Conduct program audits to ensure fidelity, quality, and consistency across units and shifts.
- Promote a culture of accountability, clinical excellence, continuous learning, and person-centered care.
- Serve as the organization’s primary authority on behavioral systems, programming, and strategy.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in Applied Behavior Analysis, Psychology, Special Education, or a related field.
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and/or Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) required.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in behavioral programming.
- Experience with ASD, I/DD, and/or mental health populations required.
- Experience in residential or inpatient behavioral health settings strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, program development, staff training, data analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
