General Definition of Work:
Performs intermediate human support work providing assistance and educational support to the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in areas of nutrition and breastfeeding and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned personnel.
Starting at $19.72/hr
Essential Functions:
- Obtains anthropometric measurements and laboratory values on children under five (5) years of age, and pregnant and breastfeeding women to assist in determining eligibility for WIC Supplemental Food Program. Includes capturing height, weight, head circumference, blood pressure, and blood sample, and recording results. Observes behavior of children and parents and reports anything unusual.
- Prepares lab area, performs controlled tests, and cleans and sterilizes equipment and room daily. Inventories clinic supplies and orders as necessary.
- Provides breastfeeding education, technical, and hands-on support and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Maintains regular contact with WIC clients and facilitates classes, support groups, and provides instructions on use of breast pumps and storage of expressed milk. Identifies the need for referrals to the breastfeeding coordinator and makes other referrals as appropriate.
- Enters data, answers phone, maintains documents, etc. Schedules clients in system, performs intake and verifies client eligibility. Takes meeting minutes and verifies insurance. May travel to community clinics.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Moderate (one (1) plus years) experience in medical setting.
Special Requirements:
- Valid Driver’s license in the State of Michigan.
- Must have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six (6) months.
- Be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and have a desire to help other clients.
- Be familiar with WIC; current or previous WIC client is preferred.
- Have good communication and organizational skills.
- Be fluent in the language of the majority of clients they counsel.
- Be a member of the community for whom they serve.
