Android Developer
Location: DEARBORN, Michigan (Hybrid)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Android Full-Stack Engineer to join the Platform Stability team. This role is responsible for diagnosing, debugging, and resolving complex Android stability issues across the entire Android stack, both above and below the Treble boundary. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working within Android framework internals, analyzing and modifying AOSP source code, troubleshooting system-level issues, and driving root-cause analysis for highly complex problems. This is a hands-on engineering position for someone who enjoys solving challenging platform issues and improving overall Android system reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop Android middleware components and background services that support platform-level functionality.
- Debug, analyze, and reverse-engineer complex issues directly from Android Open Source Project (AOSP) source code.
- Drive Android platform stability and reliability initiatives across multiple releases.
- Resolve Android upgrade, migration, and integration issues.
- Diagnose and remediate issues within core Android components, including Activity Manager, Window Manager, Package Manager, Car Service, and SurfaceFlinger.
- Investigate and resolve black screen issues, boot failures, and ANRs (Application Not Responding).
- Perform root-cause analysis on difficult-to-reproduce or previously unknown issues.
- Address compliance and certification failures within CTS, VTS, ATS, and STS test environments.
- Provide technical leadership and direction for platform-level troubleshooting efforts.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's Degree
Experience: 3+ years of hands-on Android platform/framework development experience. Proven experience developing Android middleware and background services. Experience creating feature-rich interfaces using AIDL, Binder, and Android APIs. Demonstrated success resolving complex Android platform stability issues. Hands-on experience contributing to and modifying AOSP source code. Experience working across the full Android stack, including Framework, Native services, Vendor layers, and Middleware components.
Technical Skills:
- Kotlin: Ability to develop and maintain Kotlin-based Android middleware and background services. Experience working within Android framework and system_server layers.
- C++: Hands-on experience debugging and modifying native Android components such as SurfaceFlinger, HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), and vendor partition components. Ability to troubleshoot and reverse-engineer issues directly within native AOSP code.
- Java: Strong understanding of Android framework internals. Experience reading, debugging, and modifying Java-based framework components, including Activity Manager and Window Manager. Experience designing and implementing Binder/AIDL interfaces exposed to applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Android Automotive OS (AAOS) and Car Service experience.
- Knowledge of HAL architecture and vendor integrations.
- Experience supporting CTS, VTS, ATS, and STS compliance testing.
- Familiarity with Android graphics architecture and display subsystems.
- Experience with native debugging tools, including GDB, LLDB, Perfetto, Systrace, and Logcat analysis.
- Familiarity with Android build systems (Soong/Make).
- Understanding of Android partition architecture.
- Experience partnering with SoC or silicon vendors during platform bring-up activities.
- Master's Degree.
