About the Role
Join our team! The City of Kentwood is seeking a Fleet Services Technician to support our Public Works Department. In this role, you’ll perform skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul work on the City’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, helping keep essential City services operating safely and efficiently.
You’ll work on a wide variety of equipment, including police and fire vehicles, automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, and small engines. This position is ideal for an experienced technician who enjoys diagnosing complex mechanical and electrical issues, working with a variety of equipment, and solving problems in a hands-on environment.
What You'll Do
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy-, medium-, and light-duty vehicles and equipment
- Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic systems
- Perform complex repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and drive axles
- Diagnose and repair original equipment and aftermarket electrical and electronic systems
- Install and modify electrical, lighting, computer, and radio systems in vehicles and equipment
- Fabricate and weld parts and equipment
- Operate heavy equipment and drive a variety of vehicles and trucks
- Maintain shop tools and equipment
- Read and interpret repair manuals, drawings, specifications, and technical information
- Road-test vehicles and equipment following repairs
- Participate in snow removal operations
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using automated fleet administration systems
- Prepare written and oral reports of work performed
- Follow safe work practices and properly use required safety equipment and PPE
- Assist other Public Works divisions as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Formal coursework in vehicle maintenance
- Two years of journey-level experience maintaining and repairing vehicles and/or heavy construction equipment, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Ability to obtain a Michigan CDL Class A with Tanker (“N”) endorsement within six months of hire
- Ability to obtain ASE certifications in automotive, light and heavy truck repair or Michigan Motor Vehicle Mechanic certification for automotive and heavy-duty trucks, including brakes and suspension, within six months of hire
- Knowledge of gasoline, diesel, and electric-powered vehicles and equipment
- Strong diagnostic and mechanical repair skills
- Ability to safely operate and maintain hand, power, and shop tools and equipment
- Ability to read and interpret manuals, specifications, and drawings
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Pay and Benefits
Hourly pay range: $28.41 – $36.29, depending on qualifications and experience

About the Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works keeps the City of Kentwood beautiful and functional with a team of nearly 40 full- and part-time employees. The department has five divisions that work together to maintain the City’s infrastructure, which includes more than 150 miles of pipes underground and more than 155 miles of streets above ground, as well as the City parks and grounds, buildings and fleet of vehicles. DPW takes care of everything from snow plowing and street cleaning to parks maintenance and police cruisers. The five divisions are building maintenance, fleet services, grounds maintenance, streets maintenance and utilities (water and wastewater) services.
