Purpose and Scope
The position provides maintenance services that support City operations and help keep facilities, parks, streets, and other municipal functions operating safely, efficiently, effectively, and cleanly.
Examples of Job Duties
The Part-Time Service Person may:
- Clean, inspect, and maintain shops, facilities, parks, and other City properties.
- Operate trucks, forklifts, weed trimmers, and related equipment.
- Transport trash, debris, sand, grit, sludge, and other waste for disposal.
- Remove snow and perform grounds maintenance.
- Assist during emergencies and work mandatory overtime when required.
- Assist with special events by moving equipment and removing waste.
- Repair and maintain City facilities and properties.
- Perform routine maintenance such as painting and minor fixture or building repairs.
- Supervise temporary or seasonal employees when necessary.
- Establish and maintain safe work zones for employees, contractors, and the public.
- Use PPE and appropriate work-zone and confined-space safety practices.
- Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
- Work varying shifts depending on department needs.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Applicants must have:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of manual labor and the ability to perform heavy physical work.
- Knowledge of safe mechanical operation of trucks and motorized equipment.
- Ability to work safely around hazardous conditions and materials.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work cooperatively with others.
- Basic mechanical and preventive-maintenance knowledge.
- Knowledge of materials and methods used in municipal infrastructure maintenance.
- Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with property owners and the public.
- Ability to learn and use computers, software, wireless devices, and other technology.
- Ability to function as part of a team.
- Ability to work overtime and during emergencies.
- A valid State of Michigan driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Other Requirements of the Job
Employees must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and obtain required certifications, which may include confined-space, fork-truck, or aerial-lift credentials.
Employees must successfully complete required City safety and equipment-operation training programs and be available for night, weekend, and overtime assignments when needed.
Certain departmental assignments may require additional licenses or certifications.
Physical and Mental Demands
The position involves strenuous physical labor and frequent heavy lifting. Employees must be able to ride in and operate machinery for extended periods, perform repetitive work, use manual and automated tools and equipment, stoop, balance, reach, climb ladders, and travel across uneven terrain.
Work may involve confined spaces, heights, chemicals, and potentially hazardous equipment. Employees must be able to follow safety directions, perform basic mathematical calculations such as area and volume, and identify workplace safety hazards visually and by sound.
