Summary
Under general supervision, the Part-Time Bus Driver safely and courteously operates Dial-A-Ride vehicles to transport passengers. The employee also communicates within the Dial-A-Ride system, completes required records and reports, and performs related duties. Dial-A-Ride operates seven days per week, with assignments determined by supervision.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
- Driving motorized bus equipment and transporting passengers.
- Ensuring passengers pay appropriate fares.
- Providing passengers with directions and assistance.
- Handling transfers and announcing streets and destinations.
- Adjusting route and destination signage.
- Assisting passengers with disabilities when boarding and exiting.
- Inspecting and testing equipment before each run.
- Performing routine vehicle servicing, including fuel and fluid checks.
- Keeping floors, windows, steps, and other areas clean.
- Removing snow, ice, slush, or mud as necessary.
- Maintaining proper vehicle lighting, heating, ventilation, and cleanliness.
- Reporting repair needs.
- Maintaining required records and reports.
- Coordinating emergency repairs using established procedures.
- Contacting appropriate agencies during accidents or emergencies.
- Maintaining scheduled departure times and vehicle spacing.
- Performing related duties as required.
Experience and Training
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED is required.
Applicants must have knowledge of streets and activity locations within Midland and surrounding areas, understand two-way radio operation and applicable traffic regulations, follow oral and written instructions, interact effectively with the public, possess basic mechanical aptitude, and be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the position.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Applicants must possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license with a good driving record.
Additional Requirement
Employees hired into the position must obtain a Class C Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement. The City provides the required on-the-job training.
