General Purpose of Job
To contribute to the safe, efficient, and successful operation of James Steel by preparing, setting up, and maintaining tube mill tooling and equipment for production. The Mill Set-Up Technician is responsible for assisting with mill changeovers, verifying material and production requirements, maintaining tooling, and ensuring mill setups are completed accurately to minimize downtime while producing quality tubing that meets customer specifications.
The Mill Set-Up Technician is required to:
- Follow all company safety rules, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Read and correctly use micrometers and other measuring equipment.
- Measure tube outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness to verify product meets specification.
- Understand proper inspection points when measuring tubing.
- Assist in sizing tubing following roll or sizing changes.
- Perform and assist with roll changes on all assigned tube mills.
- Verify rolls are installed in the correct mill stands.
- Inspect roll bearings for wear and proper operation.
- Replace bearings as required.
- Read and interpret coil tags including heat number, strip width, steel grade, and material identification requirements.
- Understand the importance of material traceability throughout production.
- Read and understand mill orders including product dimensions, tolerances, steel grade, tube length, and critical customer requirements.
- Complete all required production paperwork accurately and completely.
- Verify production information with crane operators and other team members before processing material.
- Accurately enter production information into company computer systems.
- Assist with complete roll changes during mill setups.
- Assist with blade changes on both 4-inch and 6-inch mills.
- Assist with jaw changes on both 4-inch and 6-inch mills.
- Safely operate forklifts after receiving company certification.
- Safely operate overhead cranes after receiving company certification.
- Perform blade sharpening operations.
- Clean, inspect, and prepare dies and roll tooling for production.
- Perform bearing replacement and preventative maintenance on tooling as required.
- Perform raw material testing and inspections as directed.
- Communicate setup issues, tooling concerns, and equipment problems to supervisors and maintenance personnel.
- Work closely with production and maintenance teams to minimize setup time and maximize mill uptime.
- Follow all written and verbal work instructions, setup procedures, and quality standards.
- Assist in training new employees as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The Mill Set-Up Technician is required to assist and/or direct the activities of:
- Any helper or trainee assigned to assist with mill setup activities.
- Production personnel during scheduled mill changeovers when directed by supervision.
