Position Summary
The Unit Clerk supports the General Surgery Unit by performing clerical, communication and customer service functions that help ensure smooth daily operations. This role manages communication systems, maintains records, assists patients and visitors, and supports nursing staff with essential unit tasks. The Unit Clerk is a key part of the care team and helps maintain a safe, organized and welcoming environment.
Key Responsibilities

Coordinate the flow of information throughout the unit

Answer phones and nurse call systems, relay messages and assist patients, visitors and staff

Direct visitors and distribute mail, newspapers and flowers
-
Compile and maintain patient census and unit records
-
Support patient flow in collaboration with the charge nurse
-
Perform clerical duties, process equipment and staff requests
-
Prepare and maintain patient medical records
-
Monitor and requisition supplies, organize and store items
-
Input and retrieve information in computerized systems
-
Transport patients and guests within the facility as needed

Stock supplies to support patient care

Deliver admission paperwork and assist with Medicare/Important Message forms

Manage incoming pneumatic tube deliveries and distribute items to nursing staff

Support environmental safety and cleanliness

Assist patients and families with basic needs

Maintain unsupervised access to medication rooms for stocking and supply retrieval

OB Mother Baby/Antepartum only: hold and cuddle stable newborns under RN supervision
Patient Safety Assistant Duties (BMH Only)
In designated departments, the Unit Clerk may function as a Patient Safety Assistant for suicide precautions. Responsibilities include:

Continuous observation and prevention of unsafe patient behaviors

Communicating patient status to the RN

Assisting with patient turns and transfers
-
Accompanying patients to diagnostic tests as needed
-
Maintaining a clean and orderly environment
-
Using proper body mechanics and safe work practices
Note: PSA duties are not required in the following departments: Infusion Center, Endoscopy, OB Labor/Delivery, OB Mother/Baby, Surgery, Pre-Op Surgery, Bronson Outpatient Surgery Center – Waln, NICU, PACU, Anticoagulation Clinic, Prep & Recovery Unit.
Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED (required for hires on or after 6/1/2017)

Working knowledge of medical terminology

Ability to use computerized systems for data entry and retrieval

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks

Effective communication skills with patients, visitors and care team members
-
Ability to complete hospital orientation and competency requirements

Physical and Work Environment Expectations

High levels of mental and visual focus (computer work 70–90 percent of the time)

Frequent standing, walking and lifting up to 20 pounds

Occasional assistance with heavier patient-related tasks
