POSITION SUMMARY
The Grounds Manager is responsible for the care, maintenance, and overall appearance of all Delta College grounds under the direction of the Director of Facilities. This position oversees routine inspections, prioritizes projects, and supervises personnel responsible for grounds maintenance and operations.
The Grounds Manager is responsible for comprehensive oversight of:
- Snow removal operations
- Landscaping and turf management (including fertilizer and weed control programs)
- Annual and perennial flower installations
- Roadway and parking lot maintenance
- Wooded acreage and nature trails
- Athletic facilities, including golf greens, softball, baseball and soccer fields, and tennis courts
- Pond water treatment program
This position also serves as project manager for all grounds-related initiatives, including athletic field improvements, irrigation systems, landscape enhancements, and utility-related projects.
The Grounds Manager serves as the primary liaison for grounds-related vendors and contractors, negotiates and administers service contracts, develops Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and provides recommendations to the Director of Facilities.
Additional responsibilities include developing and maintaining:
- Five-year capital project plans
- Five-year equipment replacement plans
- Grounds equipment inventories
This position is expected to become proficient in operating all grounds maintenance equipment and either perform or coordinate mechanical repairs, welding, and equipment fabrication. The Grounds Manager also hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates temporary student employees, ensuring safe operation of equipment and proper completion of assigned duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
- Supervise, direct, and train grounds personnel while maintaining positive labor-management relationships in accordance with the union agreement.
- Inspect campus grounds and exterior facilities to identify maintenance needs and initiate work orders.
- Review the quality and quantity of completed work.
- Serve as a working supervisor by actively participating in daily grounds maintenance while overseeing assigned staff.
- Operate grounds equipment including backhoes, large snow removal equipment, tractors, and related machinery.
- Perform or coordinate mechanical repairs including equipment diagnostics, parts replacement, welding, and tire repair.
- Train employees on equipment operation and safe work practices.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree or equivalent knowledge and skills.
- Major in Business Management, Horticulture, Landscaping, Forestry, or a related field.
- Three to seven years of related experience.
