Role Summary
The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) oversees all pharmacy operations and ensures compliance with state regulations, organizational policies, and professional standards. Working with minimal supervision, the PIC manages all phases of retail pharmacy service, including dispensing medications, providing drug information, supervising staff, and maintaining accurate records. This role requires strong clinical judgment, leadership, and attention to detail.
Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Responsibilities

Review, interpret, and accurately fill prescriptions.

Consult patient profiles for allergies, interactions, refill status, and pricing.

Verify orders with prescribers and communicate concerns regarding dosages, allergies, or contraindications.

Provide clinical and technical drug information to patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Maintain complete and accurate patient prescription records, including updates for new orders, allergies, and diagnoses.

Identify and resolve conflicts within patient drug therapy plans.

Stay current with pharmacy practice developments and complete continuing education requirements.

Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure proper equipment functionality.

Manage narcotic records and ensure compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.

Answer phones, take prescriptions, and provide general and patient-specific information.

Support daily department operations, including ordering, receiving, restocking, and equipment troubleshooting.

Participate in drug utilization reviews, quality assurance activities, and special projects.
Leadership & Compliance Responsibilities

Supervise all pharmacy staff activities related to purchasing, storage, compounding, repackaging, dispensing, and distribution of medications and devices.

Enforce policies and procedures related to procurement, storage, compounding, dispensing, and patient communication.

Establish and oversee secure storage and safekeeping of pharmaceuticals, including security measures when the pharmacy is closed.

Develop and supervise record-keeping systems for purchasing, sales, delivery, possession, storage, and safekeeping of medications and devices.

Create and oversee policies and procedures for individuals delegated responsibilities within the pharmacy.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required.

Licensed Pharmacist in good standing with the State of Michigan; must complete required continuing education every two years.

Must work at least 8 hours per week in the pharmacy per State of Michigan requirements.

Must complete and submit the State of Michigan PIC application.

Basic word processing skills and ability to operate pharmacy-related hospital software.
Physical & Cognitive Requirements

High levels of mental and visual concentration (CRT work 70–90% of the time).

Frequent standing and walking; regular lifting of up to 20 lbs; occasional assistance with heavier tasks.
-
Requires hand/eye coordination and occasional fatiguing physical motions.
