The purpose of this job is to perform inspections for compliance with Municipal, State, and National codes and identify defects and potential hazards. Performs residential and commercial plumbing inspections. Consults with engineers, architects, developers, contractors, owners, and the general public. Inspects complicated institutional and commercial projects. Leads, trains, advises, and assists staff with questions and major projects
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Conducts inspections of industrial, residential and commercial plumbing systems, including medical facilities and medical gas systems
- Conducts inspections of water and sewer connections and repairs
- Responds to and investigates plumbing system complaints; answers questions from the general public, realtors, contracts and builders
- Consults with engineers, developers, contractors and owners on how to comply with the codes that are implemented in the City of Grand Rapids
- Revises plumbing ordinances; maintains records and prepares reports on plumbing inspection activities; writes violation letters to order owners to repair or replace plumbing systems; issues permits and corrective orders and writes violation notices
- Makes recommendations for procedural and code changes; provides instruction to city employees and plumbing trades workers on updates of plumbing code; interprets codes and construction details
- Reviews plans for plumbing installations for new construction and existing structures. Investigates plumbing system complaints involving pressure and water quality issues.
- Performs computer-based work as a core function of the position, including data entry, digital recordkeeping, and use of department-specific software.
- Prepares and maintains records on backflow devices in the water system; determines testing periods for new devices; maintains records of state certified backflow testers; prepares annual state required report regarding cross connection control program
- Represents the City at plumbing inspection conferences
- Performs related work as required
