Role Summary
The Unit Supervisor (Unit Coordinator) provides day-to-day clinical leadership and operational support for the NICU. This role serves as a mentor, coach, and resource to staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, strong teamwork, and consistent adherence to unit standards. The supervisor partners closely with the manager/director on staffing, performance development, hiring, and process improvement.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience

Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan

Department-specific certifications as required (BLS, ACLS, PALS, etc.)

Advanced nursing certification preferred

Leadership experience (formal or informal) preferred

Primary Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Leadership
-
Serve as daily clinical liaison for staff, physicians, and management.

Maintain a safe environment of care and ensure quality standards are met.

Act as first responder for clinical issues and service recovery.
-
Provide guidance on departmental processes and job performance.
Staffing & Scheduling
-
Coordinate daily staffing assignments and adjust coverage based on volume and call-ins.

Support development of staffing plans and budget alignment.

Approve/deny PTO and communicate scheduling updates.
-
Facilitate staff participation in committees and meetings.
Team Development & Performance
-
Mentor, coach, and support staff in professional growth.
-
Provide real-time performance feedback and collaborate on development plans.
-
Participate in evaluations, discipline processes, and peer review input.

Assist with recruitment, interviewing, and retention efforts.
Unit Governance & Communication
-
Co-lead shared governance activities and mentor staff leaders.

Facilitate charge nurse and unit meetings.

Maintain knowledge of policies, procedures, and standards; contribute to updates.
Quality & Compliance

Conduct and support audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.

Evaluate quality and appropriateness of care.

Implement and monitor new processes to improve patient outcomes and team efficiency.
Additional Notes
-
Some Unit Coordinators may support multiple locations.
-
Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum roles require Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring.

Physical requirements include periods of high mental/visual focus and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
