Emissions Lab Hardware Engineer (Temporary)
Location: Chelsea, MI
Pay up to $43.44/hour
We are seeking a hands-on Emissions Lab Hardware Engineer to support emissions testing, troubleshooting, calibration, and laboratory operations in a fast-paced automotive testing environment. This temporary onsite role is ideal for candidates with strong technical troubleshooting experience in analytical equipment, instrumentation, or test systems. The engineer will work closely with technicians and cross-functional teams to diagnose equipment issues, support emissions testing activities, and ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Troubleshoot emissions analytical benches, secondary sampling systems, and chassis dynamometers
Support emissions testing setup, execution, calibration, and quality control activities
Diagnose hardware, instrumentation, electrical, and system-level issues
Analyze emissions and test data to identify trends, abnormalities, and root causes
Support repair and maintenance activities alongside union technicians
Verify operation of pumps, valves, heated lines, flow controls, and sampling systems
Document calibrations, corrective actions, audits, and testing activities in compliance with ISO 17025 standards
Support continuous improvement initiatives related to lab equipment reliability and data quality
Ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent hands-on technical experience
Technical degrees are acceptable and high school diploma is required
Hands-on experience troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems and instrumentation devices utilizing service manuals and engineering drawings
Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues with minimal supervision
Experience analyzing test data for compliance and root cause investigations
Familiarity with data acquisition systems and test software
Ability to work effectively in a unionized laboratory or test environment
Strong problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills
Strong understanding of electrical, mechanical and instrumentation diagrams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with chassis dynamometers
Strong understanding of emissions testing principles, sampling methodologies, quality control, and measurement systems
Hands-on experience troubleshooting emissions analytical benches and secondary sampling equipment including data acquisition systems and motor control systems
Experience with regulated emissions testing (FTP, WLTP, US06, RDE, etc.)
Knowledge of emissions regulations (EPA, CARB, EU) and internal audit practices
Experience with secondary dilution tunnels, bag sampling, PM/PN sampling, and related hardware
Experience supporting maintenance and repairs in collaboration with techniciansExperience with automation, controls, instrumentation, or lab hardware integration
Prior experience in automotive or powertrain testing environments
Experience with Emissions sampling analyzer maintenance and diagnostics, instrumentation calibration, drives and motor controls
Experience with Horiba CVS (constant volume sampler), Horiba MEXA-ONE, PEMS, Burke Porter chassis dynamometers, Modal Sampling systems, AVL, Micro soot, AVL SPC, AVL APC Particle
Counter, SHED VT evaporative emissions testing, Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery ORVR testing, National Instrument Devices (PLC)
Work Environment
100% onsite in an emissions laboratory and test cell environment
Flexible hours and weekend overtime may be required based on testing schedules
No travel required
