Work Schedule: Traditionally Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with occasional evening and weekend work required.
Salary: Targeted Salary Range: $72,160-$77,570
Travel: Less than 10%
Brief Statement of Duties
Brief Statement of Duties: Advance the image of Northern Michigan University (NMU) through high-quality marketing, information and promotional materials. Responsible for the leadership and supervision of the conceptual and creative processes and the writing and production of official university print and electronic publications and other communication formats used to promote or market the university to prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other university stakeholders. Disseminate institutional information through the effective use of mass communication media and technologies. Oversee the production and communication of Northern Today. Take the lead in maintaining good working relationships between the University community and mass media agencies and individuals.

Required Minimum Work Experience: Five years of experience writing for print and/or digital publications.
Five years professional experience at a daily, weekly, or specialized newspaper, magazine, radio, or television station; as an editor, news director, publicist, and/or public relations practitioner; or as an on-air broadcaster, which includes working with regional and national news media to develop and place news or feature media items.
Demonstrated professional experience with magazines production.
Demonstrated professional experience in conceiving and writing marketing materials.
Experience working with writers and clients.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:
Must be a consummate writer and editor with outstanding interpersonal communication skills, demonstrated news judgment, and proficiency in print, broadcast, and electronic journalism.
Ability to write copy tailored to all media platforms, with familiarity with evolving technologies, equipment, and software used to gather, produce, and disseminate information.
Possess a service orientation and the ability to be persuasive while working in a collegial environment.
Ability to rapidly gather and organize complex or esoteric information and produce polished communication and marketing pieces.
Must be capable of managing multiple projects under deadline.
Must demonstrate innovative editorial and graphic techniques to convey complex concepts clearly and engagingly.
Skill in planning, managing complex tasks, and supervising others.
Ability to produce polished, publication-ready news stories.
Ability to work effectively with media members at the state, regional, and/or national level.
Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and grammar skills, with familiarity with AP and other style manuals.
Ability to collaborate with a creative team and representatives across academic departments and university offices.
Ability to research and gather information from a variety of sources.
Understanding of targeted audiences, including prospective undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, donors, and community members.
Keen interest in academic pursuits and scholarly activity.
Working knowledge of public information and public relations practices across the Internet and online communications.

Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, or related discipline.
Experience working with photographers.
